math ppl, i dont care if this is really obvious, but tell me the answer
Three guys go into a hotel and a room for all three of them costs $25 a night.
They only need to stay for one night.
They dont want to split $25 into 3, so they each pay $10 and go up to their room.
The hotel owner doesnt want to keep their $5 change, so he sends a bell boy up to their room to give it to them.
The bell boy doesnt want to split $5 into 3, so he keeps $2 and gives each of them $1.
Now each of them, after getting their change payed $9. $9 x 3 is $27, + the bell boy's $2 is $29.
Where is the last dollar?

25 / 3 = 8 1/3

Therefore everyone should get 1 2/3 back

Since the bellboy pocketed 2 total (ie. 2/3 each)... every gets back only 1.

$9x3 = $27 + the $3 they got back = $30.

The question is worded tricky and leads people into doing faulty math.

then $9 comes in as a result of the $3, so you cant add it again

Hotel owner - $25
Each person - $1
Bellboy - $2

25+(3*1)+2=30.

All accounted for.

your supposed to subtract 2 not add two.

9x3= 27 - 2 = $25

you have to add 2, youre trying to make the original $30 they payed

read the riddle again. you will see that i am correct

they paid $30... the bell was giving them back $5. they wrote the equation wrong on the riddle on purpose. giving it back would make the total $25.

Where is the last dollar?

the original version words it much clearer than that and still retains the mysterious "where did the $1 go?" effect.

You think it takes "math people" to figure this out?

After getting the $3 back, they have paid $9 each or $27 total. Of that $27, the hotel owner has $25, and the bellboy has $2. There is no dollar.

This is ages old, and yes it is just the way you do the math, I still think it is amusing the way they make it work though. I first heard it off of Highway to Heaven, yea the show is older than time itself.
