Riddle, kinda

Answer this please;

On my way to St. Ives,
I met a man with seven wives.
Each wive had seven sacks,
Every sack had seven cats,
all the cats had seven kits.
Kits, cats, sacks, wives,
how many were going to St. Ives?

How many wives, sacks, cats and kits were met?

Its either 0, or powers of 7, that is what is confusing me.

I think the answer is one since we're only told that one person is going to St. Ives. The others could have been passed as they were leaving.

PRetty obvious at that

7^0 = 1 , you

EDIT my bad, the question was how many wives were going, not including you.

then it is just 0

You were the only one going to St.Ive's. The man and his wive's and all their crap arent going to St.Ive's...you just met him on the way and he told you. So, theres one person going to St.Ives. You only met one person.

the answer is zero. they arent going to st ives, only you are

*edit* oh were met.. whoops, i thought it was people going to saint ives. in this case, it'd be 1 + 7x7x7x7 (man + wives, sacks, cats, kittens)

Whoops, guess I didn't pay attention to the second question: "How many wives, sacks, cats and kits were met?"

yes, the question is how many were met. This question is actually in a math textbook. So, did i only meet the man, or were all the others with him, no matter where they are going.
