Riddick vs Riddick

Now this I dont get... The Chronicles of Riddick is coming out friday, it's rated PG-13 which makes me very angry. It's the sequel to Pitch Black, which was a pretty decent sci-fi flick, that had a great character in Riddick... and rated R! Ok, so the sequel is rated PG-13 for the kids to come in and watch. I heard it was edited just so it would be PG-13 only.

Now, The Chronicles of Riddick: Escape from Butcher Bay is an Xbox game, and is a prequel to Pitch Black. It's rated M (for mature) and has more foul pottymouthness than any game I've played before. It's super violent: bare handed or brassknucks fistfights that leave blood stains on the walls, shivs that slash people up good... and in one cutscene, there was a guy that broke another guys arm up close and personal, complete with crunch and bloodspray, only to assume it was a compound fracture.

Why do they do this? I'm guessing because even though the game is rated M, they're banking that parents wont care that their kid plays it, so the creators had no qualms about releasing it in it's state... however if the movie was R rated then kids couldnt go see it... so they knocked it down.

From the way I see it, PG-13 = more ticket sales (kids under 17/18 not allowed to see R-rated w/o adults... usually) whereas games rated M are actually kind of a marketing tool now 😀

Unfortunate, but perhaps very very true.

the game i was skeptical about until i rented it and played it for 6 hours straight. its not the best, but it is good. they say the f word all the time. it is pretty mature. the collections of shivs alone.........

Yah, cuz if they had the F-bomb all through the movie then it would be a better movie!!!11!

Pitch Black kicked ass and so will Riddick. Keep in mind that Top Gun is PG. 😛

I'm just noticing that they didnt bother to edit the game to get a T rating, but they did edit the movie to get the PG-13 rating, and I hope you're right 🙂

Well, GTA (amonst others) has shown that it doesn't matter if a game is rated M or not. It will still sell. I don't know if it's because parents are still oblivious or if the salespeople just don't do their job.

Movies are a different story. Hell, I'm 27 and was still getting carded for R movies up until about 3 years ago! If you cut out the teen market then you're cutting out pretty much the biggest market that goes to movies. Oh, and let's not forget that Riddick really only has one week to pull this off since Spidey 2 comes out next week.

This is true, I'm pretty sure Pitch Black made most of it's money from it's DVD release... I'm guessing that CoR will unfortunately flop at the box office as well being released inbetween high profile movies like Spidey, Shrek and Harry.

I'm sure someone has "obtained" this movie via warez by now. A simple  or  would be nice.

I don't see how it's possible to judge a movie based on what is floating around on the internet right now. Maybe the quality of pre-release pirating has vastly increased since I last saw one though.

M rated video games tend to sell just as well as lesser rated video games. The same is not true for film releases.

Perhaps that needs to change. I think this just goes to show that parents just dont care about the content of video games that their kids are playing.

...that is until their kid goes apesh1t and hurts others and/or themselves, then the videogames get the fingerpointing 😉

Money. Plain and simple.

Show me a game that sells 100+ Million dollars in two weeks. Widening the viewing audience to the 13+ range only makes it that much more profitable (as long as it's a good movie).

If the film is any good at all it should do very well. There is plenty of time until Spiderman 2 releases on the 30th for Riddick to make some cash. Besides Harry Potter there is really nothing else even close that shares the audience with it until then. Spiderman could also benefit Riddick, as the first weekend of Spiderman 2 will likely see sold out shows, Riddick will likely catch some spillover business.

Weird, for some reason I was thinking that Spiderman was releasing on the 18th. I'm wrong again!
