Hey all. Not sure how good this drive is, but I thought I'd post and let you all decide. I saw this while reading over at storagereview.com

Here's the link to Hypermicro

And the storagereview banner stated that if you put "StorageReview" in the text box when ordering you get free shipping. The kit does include Nero 5.5 as well. Good deal?

Anyone know how good this is? Am I better off getting a plextor 16x?
I want a 20x or 24x cdrw soon... I am not in a rush, but my old 4x writers are killing me slowly.

VERY GOOD DEAL i was about to post this. HOT! CD-R Info site liked this drive a lot! take a look people!

Ricoh is a very good brand. Hypermicro is an awesome store. I shop at hypermicro all the time. Lots of their stuff is IDE now, though. They used to have mountains of SCSI stuff.

I got the 16x10x40 Iomega CDRW a few weeks ago for $143 shipped after a $50 MIR from buy.com. It rocks. It is my opinion that the $50 difference is not worth the 1.5 minutes you might possibly save with this drive. If you have an extra $50 then it is HOT. Good luck.

nice post, but i wonder about the scant 2 mb buffer. the yamaha 16x is 189 and has 8mb buffer. of course it is only 16x, but i own an older yamaha and it has been trouble free.

The Yamaha 16x IDE drive has an 8 meg buffer because it has no burn-proof...Maximum PC gave that drive a 6 or 7 i believe...

Also with Yamahas you arent supposed to have DMA enabled...i had an 8x IDE Yamaha drive, god that was a big mistake...

Yamaha 8X is an excellent drive. Never a coaster for me or my buddy either. The 16X does support DMA 1.
Just to clarify things up. Not everyone is unhappy with the Yamaha drives. Only a small portion of people.

If you're gonna get the 16X yamaha, do yourself a favor and pass on the IDE model. i've read so many complaints about that piece of junk. at least go for the scsi model, or get something with burnproof

i dont understand the need for burnproof with an 8mb buffer. most other burners only have 2mb buffer. doesnt this 6mg descrepency more than make up for it?

i tend to diasgree. burning music mp3s etc.. you will be fine with an 8mb buffer and running some background apps. backing up games, depends on the type of burning mode you are in. i think with an 8mb buffer, burnproof is not needed unless your running like 3dStudio Max Photoshop 6 and a bunch of other crap simul. people complain the yamah is loud. but hey, if your blasting your mp3s, you cant really hear anything anyway can you?

btw, if you can afford the 20x. go for it, even though the improvement is marginal. im just hoping these 20x drives will lower the price of the 16x drives.
