Ricochet Wireless Network

Has anyone tried the Ricochet wireless network? I've been considering trying it, but I've heard mixed reviews. Another thing that concerns me is whether the company is solid.

They are losing money faster then the government can print it. It was a good idea, but too far ahead of its time (not enough mobile systems to make it a profitable venture).

I would shy away for now, unless you can get a contract that is monthly and no large activation fees involved (basically don't sign anything that will pay them in advance of getting the services).

My friend got it for his laptop, and it seems to work pretty well. It's not as fast as 128kbps, but he's still trying to diagnose why. Usually he connects anywhere from 30-80 kbps, so it's like a 56k modem on most days. For what it's worth, he's also using it under Redhat 6.2 on his laptop. Reception is decent (in Philadelphia suburbs).

He is paying something like $800 for the year, so it's a bit steep...
