I can never tell if Ricky is hilarious or just genuinely an arsehole.
His portrayal of Brent in The Office is painful to watch at times and I dont think the real him is that different.
I think he's like Chappelle...he's able to package truth in a funny way. Sometimes it's mean, and it's to the point, but they both have the somewhat unique ability to capture the truth of the situation & deliver it like a bomb to their audience. Although I think Gervais genuinely
enjoys being a straight-up jerk who purposely performs without tact & finds it humorous that stuff like the Golden Globes prioritize ratings over content, which is why they keep inviting him back, lol. Seinfeld gets to the truth of things as well, but in a more observational kind of way that didn't offend so many people. Louis CK can do it too, to a certain extent, with his bits about how slavery supports the production & pricing of modern smartphones, or this bit, which is one of my favorites:
