I am not sure what the department of Energy does either. Do they run the electric grid and oversee power plants or what? It does not seem like they have a coherent policy on wind and solar energy.

The Internet says: The Department of Energy (DOE) is charged with advancing the national, economic, and energy security of the United States; promoting scientific and technological innovation in support of that mission; and ensuring the environmental cleanup of the national nuclear weapons complex.

Some of these supposed departments do a lot of things in the shadows. That is the real problem.

well if you look briefly at the people who held the position over the years

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Charles_Duncan_Jr. - degree in chemical engineering
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/James_B._Edwards - d.d.s
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Donald_P._Hodel - juris doctor
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/John_S._Herrington - juris doctor
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/James_D._Watkins - master's degree in mechanical engineering
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hazel_R._O'Leary - juris doctor
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Federico_Peña - juris doctor
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bill_Richardson - master's degree in international affairs (clearly not the stand out so far)
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Spencer_Abraham - juris doctor
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Samuel_Bodman - Doctor of Science in chemical engineering (at MIT)
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Steven_Chu - Ph.D. in physics, Nobel Prize in Physics in 1997
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ernest_Moniz - PhD in theoretical physics
and oops
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Rick_Perry - Bachelor of Science in Animal science ( is described as "studying the biology of animals that are under the control of humankind". Historically, the degree was called animal husbandry and the animals studied were livestock species, like cattle, sheep, pigs, poultry, and horses.)

You will see that the majority of them are highly educated, some moreso than others. I think ricky is an astoundingly bad choice for this position as well as devos for education and sessions for ag.

More likely coaching by congressional staff, "This is what you say to get through the hearings."

Incredible ability to get coached then. If we get the Tom Brady of energy secretaries because they can accept coaching and will put forth the effort. I think I can live with that.

That shows some incredible growth since he last made those comments, wouldn't you agree?

I don't think saying something reasonable instead of saying something idiotic is "incredible growth". And this is not to say that I have special reason to suspect the veracity of his statement. But it's just a statement.

Holy shit, you just compared someone with an incredible gift of athleticism and drive to someone who was able to hear what should be said and said it. No wonder drumpf impressed you.

Trump's picks for cabinet positions proves what the intelligent of us have known for a while. That Trump hates this country and is trying his hardest to fuck it up beyond belief. Even his supporters know that, the difference is that so long as this country tries to treat minorities as equals, they hate this country too.

Only the best and the brightest, best and the brightest. Best of the bunch, really! /S

This is shaping up to be one of the most incompetent administrations. The way things are going I almost think it's time to start investing in prepping supplies, water filters, iodine tablets, military rations, gas canisters...

Quite the irony if the conservatives who prepped for a kenyan muslim apocalypse got the last laugh.

Yes, it would be the height of irony if the apocalypse happened not because of Kenyan born Muslim socialist, but under the reign of their chosen president.

Brady is well known for his incredible work ethic and ability to succeed under pressure. Meanwhile, Rick is probably most well known (outside of Texas) for embarrassing himself in a presidential debate, and clearly being underprepared. Sorry not seeing the comparison here.

Giving him the benefit of the doubt here. It may be far more than just repeating words he said. He might do a really good job.

The comparison might not be there in the end, but I'll never let my first impression of him rule over all his future actions as a cabinet member. Anybody falling into that trap would be incredibly stupid.

The comparison wasn't there in the beginning.

Look I hope for the sake of our country that he proves to be competent. All we have to go on at this point is what he's done, and there's basically no logical reason this guy was put up for the post besides the R next to his name.

I didn't, but if I wanted to shutdown Government Departments or many years after was nominated to become the Head of it, I likely would learn what it did first.

Being educated is hard, saying you'll just shut things down because gov't = bad is easy.

You can argue if the lead of DOE should be a scientist or not, but it should not be a guy who both called for its elimination and accepted the job of leading it before knowing what the agency does.
We don't need an "oops" with our nuclear weapons.

That makes him the perfect candidate. Cause, when a Man U235 loves a Woman U235 very much he gives her a Neutron and a Baby is born.

"The New York Times proved again Wednesday evening that it doesn't take a whole lot for a newsroom to create and spread a false narrative from thin air."

Fake news hit piece from the Times.

So you're saying that the Republican energy lobbyist who advised Perry on his presidential run, and who served in the early phase of the Trump transition, isn't telling the truth? Because that's who made the claim.

I think there's been a tendency to exaggerate, but point being: Perry didn't fully understand the scope of the role he was taking. And there's no question that he's the least-qualified person to take the role in a while.

I don't understand why anyone would want to cut the department of energy. Both perry and Gary Johnson have stated this. it's literally insane.
http://www.foxnews.com/opinion/2017...p-should-shut-down-in-his-first-week.amp.html

John Stossel:
Friday: Abolish the Department of Energy.

Politicians say that America needs “an energy policy.” But we have one -- the free market. If someone invents a better or cheaper form of energy, the rewards will be huge. Investors will eagerly fund it. We don’t need federal bureaucrats funneling your tax money to their vision of what’s best.

When government does that, we get nice-sounding but expensive boondoggles, such as the Solyndra solar company and giant windmills that don’t budge on windless days. Your taxes go to the politically connected, like Al Gore and his friends.

The department’s nuclear supervision responsibilities belong in the Department of Defense.

Of course, Defense and other parts of government deserve to be cut, too -- but I’m patient. That can wait for week two.
