I'm being offered a nice promotion, the position is located in Richmond, VA. Don't know a thing about the place. Anyone from the area or familiar with it that can advise on what sort of town it is?

Sh!thole for sure! I lived there for five years. When we left in 1995 my wife was pregnant with our first child. As I was packing a box I was using a fairly recent newspaper as packing matieral and noticed this article which I stopped to read.

In it, the mayor of Richmond was quoted as saying that any expecting parents living in Richmond would be wise to take out a life insurance policy on their children before they are born because the crime rate is so high.

Needless to say, I was happy to be leaving!

I think it was the year before that when on New Year's Day they busted a man for killing someone. His motive? To be the one to commit the first murder of the year!

Had a friend who lived just outside of Richmond (Sandston)... I thought her area was beautiful... But, that was about 15 years ago. She went to University of Richmond and told me she was very afraid to go anywhere in the city after dark. I wish I knew what happened to her... lost track years ago. (DP, if you're out there....!)

are you working with Circuit City?

LOL, i don't even like shopping at Circuit City, i would have difficulty working there. No, i work for a securities firm and we have a big operations center in Richmond.

like most anywhere else, there's good things and bad things about richmond.. good areas and bad areas to live in. the people I know that live there now (1 in midlothian with teens, 1 in short pump with young children) are very happy there.

it's a great location really, couple hours from DC, couple hours from the beach, hour or so from williamsburg.. would recommend the burbs over the city though!

course.. I grew up in southwestern virginia.. and personally, think that is 'bout the perfectest place to live.. so I'm pretty much at odds with most of these other guys. I'm pretty much older than most of 'em too, that might have something to do with it!

I live an hour from Richmond and won't visit there after dark. There are some nice places but overall I think it's a dreary city. Short Pump is a nice place for shopping though, they have an awesome theatre and resturaunts and are building a bigass new mall. If location weren't a huge deal I would say move to Charlottesville, about 70 miles west of Richmond. It's one of the best cities to live in the Nation according to Money or some other yuppie magazine and is very safe and fun.

i used to hang out in the fan area in richmond. we'd be out till after 3 and never had a problem. I like richmond, but it comes from a post-student's perspective. dunno anything about raising a family there...

the west end is for yuppies and upwardly mobile people and families etc

downtown richmond is safe, i imagine thats where the securities firm is. richmond is about 2 hour to dc, 2 hours to the beach.

ps - i live in swva (roanoke valley) and it is NOT a shithole thank you very much. You might want to tell that to the people who have their waterfront properties (and $.55/100 taxes)

Nice place.

I think Richmond is a very good mid-sized city to live in.

Much better than Washington DC.

If you like the downtown chic life, I'd recommend moving into the Fan District.
It's an National Historic District with lots of nice row houses along beautifully tree
lined streets. It's very community oriented and has many nice parks, restaurants, boutiques, etc.
Stay a little ways away from the college (VCU) because students rent a bunch
of apartments around its perimeter. Monument Avenue is a beautiful cobblestone street with
a tree lined median and monuments of civil war people along it. Nice place to live. Also, there's some
gem streets in the neighborhood, that are really quiet and peaceful, tucked away between the major grid
streets. If you want even more of a downtown lifestyle, go to Shockoe Bottom. If you've got the bucks,
Tobaco Row is a prime place to get an apartment. Huge lofts in rennovated buildings, ala NYC style. In that area,
there are many excellent resataurants and bars.

If you want a full sized house and yard, go a little West of the Fan (near the University of Richmond around Cary St).
There's some nice houses in that area and you'll still be close to downtown. If you want a real suburban setup, the best place
is the West End (near Short Pump). It's mostly newly developed and has good shopping, restaurants, movie theaters and stuff.
Do not move to the Southside (Midlothian). It's suburban hell with mass congestion plus tolls to get anywhere.

You just need to visit. There's great places to live and overall it's a very nice city. Just got to find what's right for you.
