Nice place.
I think Richmond is a very good mid-sized city to live in.
Much better than Washington DC.
If you like the downtown chic life, I'd recommend moving into the Fan District.
It's an National Historic District with lots of nice row houses along beautifully tree
lined streets. It's very community oriented and has many nice parks, restaurants, boutiques, etc.
Stay a little ways away from the college (VCU) because students rent a bunch
of apartments around its perimeter. Monument Avenue is a beautiful cobblestone street with
a tree lined median and monuments of civil war people along it. Nice place to live. Also, there's some
gem streets in the neighborhood, that are really quiet and peaceful, tucked away between the major grid
streets. If you want even more of a downtown lifestyle, go to Shockoe Bottom. If you've got the bucks,
Tobaco Row is a prime place to get an apartment. Huge lofts in rennovated buildings, ala NYC style. In that area,
there are many excellent resataurants and bars.
If you want a full sized house and yard, go a little West of the Fan (near the University of Richmond around Cary St).
There's some nice houses in that area and you'll still be close to downtown. If you want a real suburban setup, the best place
is the West End (near Short Pump). It's mostly newly developed and has good shopping, restaurants, movie theaters and stuff.
Do not move to the Southside (Midlothian). It's suburban hell with mass congestion plus tolls to get anywhere.
You just need to visit. There's great places to live and overall it's a very nice city. Just got to find what's right for you.
