well when you have to cook like 6 cups of rice everyday, a rice cooker comes in really handy because it's so easy and they keep the rice warm. the rice cookers are really meant for east asians

that was a dumbass thing to write.

Well, the $150 ones are good if you need A LOT of rice, and for them to be kept warm throughout the day. To some people, it's worth it... since rice cookers last a LONG time. Infact, we've had rice cookers that are as old as 10+ years, and they're still fully functional... they've been passed down to family and friends (and passed back to me when i got to university... then i passed it onto somebody else). Really, the $150+ ones are for those that are more or less on 24/7... if they're not cooking rice, they're keeping it warm.

My grandma still uses her Tatung rice cooker from the 70's and it still turns out perfect rice. Forget these Japanese plastic digital steamers. Tatung TACs are built like tanks and cost around $40 for a 6 cup model. :)

I bought a Panasonic a couple fo years ago after noticing a huge thread on them here, what no-one has mentioned specifically yet, is:

They keep rice perfect for hours & hours You don't have to worry about timing the rice, you can literally fill one up in the morning & have the same rice for lunch & supper...

I give them as wedding presents etc now...

l use about 1.1 cups of water for every 1.0 cups of rice for Calrose(short grain) for cooking. For long grain stuff, I increase the water ratio to 1.2 cups of water for every cup. Someone here is using 2 cups of water for every cup of rice. Are you making Jook(congee)????

My fiance came home with a $75 rice cooker the first few days after we moved in. I questioned her reasoning for buying something so expensive when there's much cheaper out there. Not once has she made "bad" rice...

... but we do have Italian more than anything since she's not much of a chinese-food-cook. ;)

My in-laws got meone a little better than this one for Christmas a couple of years ago. Before tha, we had a cheap $20 cooker that always burned on the bottom.

IMHO, the price is well worth the benefit. Not only does it cook rice perfectly, but you can set it up before you go to work, turn the timer on, and have rice finishing as you walk in the door.

As far as I know, fuzzy logic is the system by which the cooker measures the temperature and humidity to judge the doneness of the rice.

Does anybody know if they have open heating elements? That's what's 'not allowed' here in my dorms.

You'll soon find out in the dorms, as long as they don't catch you, it's not illegal. ;););) Especially small crap like that.

well thats silly. I didnt know you had to be east asian to get a rice cooker. thanks for telling me before i went out and bought one!

Me and my wife eat rice with dinner about 4 days a week. while Uncle ben's rice is easy its rather expensive. i see those huge bags of rice for like $5 but figured you need a rice cooker for them. So was thinking of getting one. But never knew what one or how much to spend. heh hopeing to find one on sale sometime.

no, ya don't, just use the simple ratio of 2 liquid to 1 rice and you'll be fine.
