So there was a thread in Hot Deals that got >100 responses, I like rice & I had a Black & Decker Steamer that sucks making rice, so I picked up a cool looking Panasonic Rice Cooker(no fuzzy logic, sold as National Brand elsewhere). It's frigging awesome, no-one explained to me before that these things cook the rice & then keep it warm for a whole frigging day.

I'm a euro-mutt genetically, raised in the Midwest, thinking Velveta cheese was exotic;)

Are there any other ethnic foods or cooking toys I should know about?

Walk into the electronic dept of a good asian store and you'll find out what you been missing. :Q:D Personally, I prefer land near water so it's coastal living for me (seafood is cheaper too - w00t). ;)

George Foreman grill!!

Also, get a crock pot. The best things in the waorld in setting some meat/vegetable stew on low, leaving for scool/work and coming back 8 hours later to have a beautiful, bubbling stew waiting for you. Oh man, my mouth is watering thinking about it.

Or just rice and a lot of water...and you have porridge. Tastes pretty boring but works great for colds :)

Man, that's wack. No need for crappy gadgets that you never use. If you want garlic, do this. Either 1. Take large cleaver, turn sideways, and smash garlic with the side of the blade, or 2. Take a knife, and mince the garlic. Not that hard :D

Jeez...or stop being a baby about it and take the whole *head* of garlic (who till measures garlic in cloves anyway?) slice it down the center and the two halves of each clove just pop out...put the whole deal in a pan with oil, salt, cook and enjoy

I use my press constantly. They're not expensive, they use 99% of the garlic, and they mince it evenly. It takes just as long as the cleaver method (which I use if a press is not available). I love mine :)

Now I have a juicer that I think is one of the stupidest things ever. It just seems like such a waste. You end up throwing away at least half of what you put in....

;) Nothing wrong with too much garlic...and they're so cheap at the stores around here anyway. There's no reason *not* to eat 20 cloves at a time :)

Take a whole head of garlic. slice the top inch or so off, so that a little of each clove is exposed. Pop it in the oven on 350 for 20 minutes or so. Take it out and squeeze the resultant oily paste onto french bread.... ummmmmmmm. Then try and avoid breathing at people who have not engaged in the same.

Well, if you haven't had Jasmine or Basmati rice, go to the Asian food market and buy some.
As for gadgets, get a coffee roaster
Here

I have a crock pot & use it frequently, garlic press, coffee grinder. Looks like a George Foreman Grill is next :D

The coffee roaster looks interesting, but I'm goint to run out of counter space.

Have tried the Jasmine rice, like it, going to an Asian market this week to pick up some big bags of different rice...

Actually ran the Hello Kitty stuff by my wife, she didn't think it would match the stainless steel theme we have going in the kitchen;)
