Rice announces $1 billion in aid for Georgia

WASHINGTON (Reuters) - The United States on Wednesday announced at least $1 billion in aid to help U.S. ally Georgia rebuild after its conflict with Russia over the separatist enclave of South Ossetia last month.

Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice unveiled the package to help reconstruct Georgia's economy and infrastructure that was destroyed during a short war with Russia, which crushed Georgia's attempt to reassert control over South Ossetia.

"We are responding to what we consider to be urgent needs," said Rice.

Trying to figure out why I as an American taxpayer am obligated to aid Georgia in its reconstruction, seeing how it got deservedly smacked for shelling South Ossetian capital.
Maybe we should provide $1B to Ossetians instead and letting Georgians pay for the outcome of their folly. Otherwise we are going to be perpetually paying to rebuilding that country, seeing how Saakashvili is eager to try the same stunt again.

I could be wrong, but I would bet that the catch is that they have to spend the majority of the $1 billion on US goods and services. Georgia wins because they get a bunch of free shit. American companies win due to an additional $1 billion in sales. And, like you said, American taxpayers lose, because they foot the bill, and get nothing in return.

Of course, many here don't want to talk about this issue because both McCain and Obama support bringing Georgia into NATO. I'm sure they both support spending taxpayer money in this manner as well.

Budwieser and Pam Anderson Movies?

We are simply paying for Russias recent purchase of South Ossetia. Bush looked into Putin's eyes and saw a savy real estate agent.

Yeah but did you know that when Putin looked into Bushes eyes he saw nothing?

He saw the back of his skull 😉

I would rather they just dumped a billion singles from the back of a cargo plane over the state of georgia.

Great, maybe they can get the Israel treatment every year in the budget.

Then every election cycle we could have the candidates falling over each other to see who loves Georgia more.

Hopefully, in time, what's best for Georgia can trump what's best for America, just like Israel.

And the American people will lap it up. They may bitch about it, but when they go to the polls, they'll vote for it.

If you think that American's don't win by there being an (assumed) agreement which states Georgia must spend most of the $1 billion on US goods and services then you need to read a book on economics.

Of course it wouldn't help as much as putting the money directly back into my pocket but it's still an indirect boost.

I would rather have had us not be taxed that $1 billion anyway.

No, Israel gets more lopsided treatment because the Jewish community in the U.S. is so powerful. If we see a bunch of Georgian nationals moving over here and moving into a swing state (like southern Florida) then we might have a problem.

Why don't we just cut out the middle man and have China give Georgia the $1billion, that would save some overhead in the bureaucracy.

If it were up to me, all foreign aid would cease until we have a balanced budget, I know, I'm crazy and naive.

LOL, you tell me I need to read a book on economics, and then proceed to tell me I am right after all. Thanks, I guess.

Agreed.

Surely you agree, because most likely, you'll do exactly that. 😉

Oh come now, that's just rude to insult somebody who's agreeing with you 🙂

Well that's what we do with Israel, we give them "loans" to buy planes and such from Lockheed, which is in effect another defense industry subsidy. No, I don't see that as a win for anyone who doesn't own Lockheed stock. That's socialism, right?

what the hell is with liberals on this georgia issue, it's like your rabid hating of bush has gotten in the way or you facts and reason.
