They have netted an estimated $400 million from various copyright infringement lawsuits against companies and individuals, but haven't paid any of the settlement money to the artists they were suing on behalf of.

Very interesting racket they're running. Makes you wonder who the terrorists really are.

I think it's because the record companies technically own the music, so all intellectual property theft is committed against them, not the artists.

It's the Recording INDUSTRY Association of America, not the Recording ARTIST Association of America. I think there's no question as to who the RIAA supports.

The whole bid of the RIAA is that the artists were the ones being hurt though.
