According to one RPI student in NY, the RIAA sued him and took his life savings ($12,000) because he authored a search technology that was used to share a wide variety of files across campus. According to Jesse Jordan, the creator of Chewplastic, he didn't do anything wrong. "I didn't tell people what to share. I never promoted piracy." According to Cary Sherman, president of the RIAA, Jordan knew full well what his search technology was being used for. "The people who run these Napster networks know full well what they are doing: Operating a sophisticated network designed to enable widespread music thievery....the lawsuits we've filed represent an appropriate step given the seriousness of the offense."
