rheobus?

A rheobus is a type of fan controller. IIRC rheobus is different than a baybus in that the former can control fans at variable speeds, while the latter is a simple on/off switch.

Rheobuses use (typically) rheostats, so like EeyoreX said, they can allow the user variable control over fan speed... fan buses typically just have 2-3 settings, like 0v/5v/12v (off/low/high). The rheobus supplies a range of voltages at the twist of a knob.
