i just installed RH 9 and i'm having numerous problems, and VERY frustrated. i've done seraches on this site and some things seemed to have helped a little but not solved all my problems.

first off, i have a fat32 drive partitioned into 2. i can mount hdb 5 but not hdb2, meaning i only have acces to 1/2 of my hdd. i also want to know how to mount the drives permanently.

second, i can't get mplayer to install. i'm getting a whole bunch of errors after using rpm -i filename.

any help is welcome

THANKS.

i also posted this in the justlinux forum...

As far as mplayer - good luck! Installing packages on redhat sucks and is a total PITA.

As far as your fat partitions, are you sure you're not just trying the wrong partition names? If it's there, it should mount no problem.

To mount them on boot, put them in /etc/fstab.

i'm curious what version of linux do you use?

as for my partitions i have my hdd partitioned into 2 drives. i can mount hdb5 but not hdb2 which is an extended drive.

thanks for your help.

You might want to read this: /etc/fstab under Linux, which should be enough info for you to patch up your fstab.

second, i can't get mplayer to install. i'm getting a whole bunch of errors after using rpm -i filename.
Good luck, because I've never been able to get that to work, but, anyway, what are the errors that you get.

it has something to do with the file dependencies, don't know exactly. that computer that linux is on is so slow (500 celeron w/ 66meg bus) right now i dread going on it...hehe.

Rpmfind.net is the answer to your problems, just try not to mix packages from different distros.

Haha, 500mhz slow... so spoiled :)

Anyways, I use debian. Steeper learning curve but it pays off.

freshrpms.net... rpm -ihv the mplayer rpm and then head back to get all the deps...(most ar there) I have it working on a RH8 boxen and built from scratch on a gentoo boxen(ebuild... just had to a a few deps for the DVD playback)

Now if I could only get the system to recognize my DVD burner I would be in good shape.

it says 'mplayer-common = 0.90 is needed by mplayer-gui-0.90-1'

I was using NetBSD for a while, but it doesn't like SMP, so it's no good on my desktop. It has other faults anyways, as far as a desktop machine goes. My firewall is still netbsd, and I still prefer BSD to linux in general :)
