Okay okay . so since I could never get X working in debian .. I thought, I'll install RH and everything should be easy .. anyways, I've installed it two times today .. both times here is what happens .. everything is okay, but then it goes to start X and I just get that grey screen and my mouse cursor in teh middle and nothing else .. that's it .. and the mouse won't move.. have I selected the wrong com port? I'm using the serial port that is closest to the PS2 ports .. I put com1 when it asked me .. am I wrong? Cause in the setup my mouse was working. I installed KDE for my desktop .. and I don't know what is up.

edit: oh yeah .. and I picked graphical logon both times.

edit: oh yeah .. and ctrl alt backspace doesn't boot me out of X .. :( it's like totally frozen :(

Update ..

I reinstalled .. again, #3
I made it boot into text mode .. that works .. yay!
But then when I do a startx it hangs in the same place as before :(
I have tested the graphics during setup and they worked, I'm not running too high a res or anything, that stuff was tested and works, something else is messing sh!t up :(

edit .xinitrc and put the path to a window manager or xterm or something, if it comes up and you can type in it you just need to fix the mouse.

ctrl-alt-f2 to see if you can get to another console, or if the whole machine is locked up. Hardware? Anything in your XF86 log?

In /etc/sysconfig/desktop ... I have one line, that reads; Active desktop=""

I put "gnome" in the quotations .. the same thing happens, that wasn't the bug .. there is nothing in my xfree log that is telling me anything.
I tried to do XF86setup .. XF86config .. and XF86configurator .. none of those work, even as root it told me that I don't have permission .. I don't even know if it's an X thing .. but i guess it is since it seems everything else is okay in CLI mode .. :(

edit: Just logged in as root and was told I have mail .. check mail .. mail reads from redhat log watch .. reads;
Can't locate these modules;
char-major-226 (2 times)

or something to that effect .. can this be my problem? What the hell is char-major-226? Is that a keymap or something?

It's trying to load a driver for a character device with device high number 226, but 226-239 are unassigned so it must be a RedHat added thing.

type 'ls -l /dev | grep "226,"' and see if anything comes up.

Don't have permission to what?

Uninstall X and try downloading the newest stable version and installing that. Or maybe try a different distro...

Well I'm coming from Debian .. I like Debian .. but I could never get X working on it .. I have a debian server running everything (with help from a friend) . but I could never get X installed .. that is why I went the way of Redhat .. I have tried Mandrake before and I didn't like it too much, it didn't feel light and streamlined, it felt kind of bloated to be honest .. but maybe I should give it another shot ..

If you couldnt get X to work in Debian or RedHat, maybe its a hardware issue?

I assume this is the machine with the Matrox G200 video card. Is it the PCI or AGP version?

To answer both of the above question .. no this is a different machine entirely ..

ATI rage128 16mg
Abit KT7A
Seagate 6.4 gig .. (or something) ata 66 7200
Netgear FAD11 or whatever, no problems with this
64mg ram PC100
some 4x CDrom
some floppy
Duron 700

I couldn't get X to work on about three or four machines that I have fvcked with

edit: Oh yeah .. and I copped out, I'm doing a net install of mandrake right now
Currently have about 14 million more packages to download and install :( .. I'll be seeing you guys tomorrow

Okay .. same thing happens in Mandrake :Q

I'm gonna install windows and see if there is anything wrong with the ATI card .. or maybe the board .. I got both off of FS/FT .. anyways, be back tomorrow or something.

I'm thinking that it's the video card .. it worked during setup when the installer would test my X settings and display a desktop successfully though .. 64 megs of ram should only cause a slow machine, not a hanging machine .. I guess I'm gonna install windows today and see if that works.

Ooookay .. finally posting from mozilla here :)

Turns out that the vid card that I thought was an ATI Rage 128 pro was actually a Rage Fury MAXX .. (and I was wondering why it had two GPU's) ... anyways, I had the wrong vid card selected every time .. and this card is not supported, or so it seems. I threw in an old ATI mach 64 and am suffering super crap res right now, but oh well, at least it works. The thing that puzzles me is why it worked when I tested the resolutions in X .. the tests worked

weird.

$lspci
00:03.0 Ethernet controller: Digital Equipment Corporation DECchip 21142/43 (rev 30)
00:07.0 ISA bridge: Contaq Microsystems 82c693
00:07.1 IDE interface: Contaq Microsystems 82c693
00:07.2 IDE interface: Contaq Microsystems 82c693
00:07.3 USB Controller: Contaq Microsystems 82c693
00:0b.0 VGA compatible controller: Matrox Graphics, Inc. MGA 2064W [Millennium] (rev 01)
00:14.0 PCI bridge: Digital Equipment Corporation DECchip 21152 (rev 02)
01:04.0 SCSI storage controller: QLogic Corp. ISP1020 Fast-wide SCSI (rev 05)
01:09.0 SCSI storage controller: QLogic Corp. ISP1020 Fast-wide SCSI (rev 05)

All you need to look for is the chipset. For instance the video card here is a Millenium (actually a Millenium II) with a 2064W chipset, some are more descriptive than others. If nothing else it lets you check to see if you have what you really think you have.

That's the thing .. the Rage Fury Maxx is the same chipset as the Rage 128 pro that I thought I had .. it just has a pair of GPU's instead of one, and 32 meg of ram for each GPU .. quite an interesting card actually ... I couldn't find support for it in linux and I there is no support in win2k either .. so it's pretty useless to me, which is too bad, it seems like a pretty nice card. Anyways, redhat and mandrake detected it as a rage 128 pro as well .. (cause it is) ..
