I have two 120mm case fans and have seen before that some people use the 12v and 5v lines to create a 7v line for the fans to run off of. Is this ok for the powersupply and other components in the case?

This is not the greatest thing to do for your PSU, since it can cause the voltage on your +5V rail to fluctuate more than normal (and with a cheap PSU, you could theoretically damage it by driving current the wrong way on that +5V line). It's better to get a fan controller.

I've had good success w/ Zalman FanMate 1 & 2's. Just watch the wattage ratings (mobo header vs fan).

I do not see any problem in doing this. It's been done many times and many years ago. Remember, it's a difference in potential that makes the current flow. Go for it. It should silence your fans, although reduce your air movement a little bit.

actually it can be a huge problem if your PSU is shall we say of lesser quality!!!
I have known people using OKIA or Aspire and a few other brands to have major headaches with fans on the 5v rail!!

I would suggest a fan speed controller of almost any brand!!

I personally use the Zalman MFC1 to sontroll all my fans!!

and the single fan speed controllers are also good!!
