Revolutionary Music Database

Stumbled on this website, musicbrainz.org, earlier. They offer a searchable interface to their database of music, let you download their database, and provide a really cool management and labeling program. It identifies mp3's by acoustical matching. All of this for free, unlike cddb---and moderated, unlike freedb. This most likely should be in the software and programing section, but I thought a lot of people would benefit.

Sweet! I beat slashdot by 10 minutes!

Hurry! before it's slashdotted! 🙂

I was just going over there to post the story, after I posted it here...

Slashdotted as I was looking up stuff... dead now. 🙁

On the bright side, even on it's first launch day it was able to accurately look up 10% of the MP3 it tried. It definitely has promise.

It's at about 50% identified /50% unidentified, for me so far. With 300 scanned out of 3000.

My music tends to be fairly obscure.

EDIT: And I only ran it on a folder full of stuff that had no ID3 tags at all 🙂
