Reviving an "Arctic Silvered" Athlon

I knocked myself back in the 80's after hitting myself in the head after this one. i was putting Arctic Silver on my Athlon XP 1700 after i got my brand spanking new HeatSink and some of the goo dripped off the credit and onto the chip....all in the bridges and junk. i tried sopping it up with a paper towel but that didn't work so my roommate said to use "isopropyl alcohol" but that didn't work and i called the Time of Death. i already slapped a new XP in there but now i got this processor sitting around. has anyone else had this problem or know of any solutions ? Any help is appreciated, i can get a picture up later tonight. thanks. -ALAN

AFAIK Arctic Silver is not electrically conductive, so even if it gets on places on the CPU other than the core, you can still wipe it off and it won't affect its performance.

btw if you say "...dropped from the credit card"...chances are high you *might* use too much...usually you apply a very, very thin layer of AS on the cpu core...and the amount of AS you use (like about half a grain of rice) is usually *that* small there must be something wrong if it's (as you say) "dripping"........

I find that Citra-Solv cleaner works very well. It cuts through AS like a hot knife through butter. You should find it at most grocery stores. Follow up with isopropyl alcohol after using the Citra-Solv.

Dishwashing detergent works. As was said, any excess on the bridges are harmless as the stuff is electrically nonconductive.

OK, i got all the junk off but it still doesn't work. once i got it all off i looked at the die a little closer and it looks like 2 of the corners are cracked or something. i guess that's what killed it after all. i must of crushed it with the new HeatSink: ThermalTake Volcano 7. Thanks for your help anyway.

Yep, first try dish soap, then Goo Gone. Works great for me
