I was thinking about the "SAVE ENERGY" thread that was posted some time ago (Assimilator1, I think 😕 )...and maybe it's time to post something similar again.
I'm not talking about shutting down all the PC's...I'm talking about saving energy throughout the home to make up part of the PC usage or more.
The most efficient method I've found is the small screw-in fluorescent bulbs. I've installed 13 of these now...especially in high usage areas of my home (my kids closets...where they leave them on forever 😛). I now have thermostatic controlled window fans in the two bedrooms upstairs....and it really cuts the AC down in the summer. While expensive, LCD monitors use far less energy (and deskspace) than CRTs...but you could also save by making sure your CRT goes to "power save" mode or turn off when not in use.
Other energy = conservative driving i.e. Don't burn the tires off to go from one stoplight to another....remember, if you're sitting in a line..not moving, you are getting zero miles (Kilometers) per gallon (liter). If you are moving to a light at even 1 mile per hour, you are at least getting a gas mileage!
I'm sure there are many others......clean your refridgerator coils and your AC outside unit to allow more efficient flow of air and better efficiency....change your house air filters often...better insulation in your home....etc..etc..etc..
Thanks to the author (Assim1? ) of the original thread ( I looked, but couldn't find it)...I have tried to cut in all areas except the PC's, of course 😉
Good Luck All!
P.S. The compact fluorescent bulbs can be had for as little as $4.00 each and last up to 8000 hours. At about 15 watts = 60 watt regular bulb...= sizable energy savings when used enough! 🙂
