It took a while, but finally resolved my problem.
In fact my original thread has been closed and archived.

Anyway, turned out to be two problems.
The the motherboard was faulty and as other people had mentioned, the Maxtor wouldn't work with the chipset on the motherboard.
I have since changed out the motherboard and put in a Samsung HD.

Since a number of people mentioned the incompatibility issue, I took their user ids and did a random draw.

That's...cool. Very surprising that somebody would come back and pay up on something like that. I doubt it was the lure of money that made anybody offer their help.
