Review request: Intel Avaton C2750

I would be really interested in seeing you put an Intel Atom C2750 server CPU/board through the grinder. I've been on the lookout for a good home server platform and some of the initial numbers from the new Avaton look promising.

I'd be more interested in the Asrock board as it uses standard DIMMs and is probably cheaper in the long run.
 
How are you planning on using it? The atom server module is mostly for businesses that are looking for low power modules with decent parallel execution support (good for cheap web servers).

For a home platform, your users are generally very few, so a more powerful consumer level CPU would probably serve you better.

Dual core, but should have faster single threaded performance (though the atom cluster might beat it in highly parallel loads, and it beats it in max power consumption).
 
I'm probably not your average home user. My home server would run Server 2012 Essentials, plus media streaming duties and some light virtualization. So domain controller, web server, some media center app(s), RADIUS, file server, backups, router, and virtualization for me and teaching my kids.

Though I agree this would be more of a small business review than a home server review. I'm very curious about this platform. Ultra-low voltage, and based on some preliminary numbers I've seen the performance is not too bad.

Given what the basic board comes with (processor, board, loads of SATA, dual server-grade NICs, IPMI with iKVM) it's actually not that bad. Separately the parts would run more than than the Asrock C2750D4I.
 
I'm interested in the Asrock board as well. Although it's easy to find more powerful system it's hard to find a m-itx board, low profile because it's passively cooled, and 12 SATA ports, ontop of the features you have already mentioned. Would do nicely as a multipurpose NAS drive, with some web functions and Plex encoder.
