Okay this is an in-between technology standard. homeplug 1.0 is 14mbps. this is 85mbps. If you are going across the room or at a lan party 80mbps is real. Encryption will slow it down a bit. The real world of homeplug 1.0 is 14mbps really means 5meg sustained.

This unit is in my 3 level new house. I have wifi but it retrains too much. This in not even acceptable for XVID streaming to my xbox (oddly this device has a picture of a sling box on it , makes sense, its a great pair).

Cost $75 each - constrained (low availability) -

interface: Lame but cool. Needs serious polishing on the encryption which looks to be defacto on (may be why it is slower than rated).

plusses:
fully variable rates, no speed steps, and send/receive is variable as well. i can be at 40.85 send and 27mbps receive.
Unit has low latency regardless of speed. no feeling of long retrains like wifi (packet loss, heavy ping times)
if i'm at 10mbps (200ft top floor, router in basement) i get 3ms ping times.
if i'm next to my outlet i get 3ms ping times
if i'm one floor up pinging my xbox i get 3 ms ping times.
0% packet loss
Very much AV friendly.. ** SEE CONS ***
Stupid easy to setup without security (default password, but i digress the manual is teh suxor)
4 port switch. Put your pc on the switch here then route a cable to the linksys. avoid extra overhead from the poor little router :)

CONS:
Poor manual - i mean for real.
Poor setup of encryption - sorry for however pathetic it is i'm not using the default password - security looks very weak imo.
AVI : Cannot sustain enough bandwidth at 150ft to stream iso/img dvdrip's bitrate to xbox xmbc :( no problem with xvid/divx/mpeg and some (slower) mpeg-2 streams. The problem may be XMBC itself since the video stutters like every 3 seconds. Where as the AVI formats will buffer for 10 seconds before start of play. No settings since to help so far. This did not occurr at 100mbps direct wire. But wife was VERY unhappy with 150ft wire across the house. 54G on channel 13 was FAR worst, even stuttering XVID/DIVX with HyperWRT-G and antenna's. Wifi too noisy around here.

The 4 port switch allows me to use cheap WIFI bridges as well to extend my wifi to 150ft away. I guess the neighbors could use it too if they guessed my encrption password. I feel the engine is not really capable of sustaining full stream rate encrypted.

Not sure how this thing supresses surge as it cannot be used with a surge suppressor. I will call and see whats up.

I bought the item with 30 day return policy. Unless some new technology reaches the wholesalers in 30 days i'll probably stick with it.

The XE102 is 14mbps. Don't confuse with 85mbps XE104. The XE104 has a slingbox on the picture diagram. It makes sense. how many people have near-100mbps next to the tv ;)

Hope you enjoyed the review. PM me for any other questions. I will be using this since i paid $75 * 2 for it. It has some sacrifice but i have a 200gig drive in my xbox, and can just ftp the iso/img's over but thats one more step. No biggie.

I don't play games on my xbox, btw. Its just for watching recorded video n stuff. pr0n whatever.

-- returning these -- they cannot sustain dvd rates for streaming iso's. I think they are too highly overrated.

The AV200 (corinex) and homeplug AV 6000 chipset based products will do better.

the corinex is available now with 200mbps peak over existing coax or power line. They also have 128mbps homepna 3.0 for those who dont have any other choice.

good stuff. netgear not so good. not for the premium they are demanding the 5500cs chipset just isn't good enough. the 6000 chipset is promising, but i dont see many products out yet.

the corinex av200 product line is shipping in stock now.

Just a note that while I'm not using them for Video streaming, they are working quite well in Mexico to extend my Sonos network where the Sonos WIFI network won't reach (the walls in the house are 2 foot stone walls, wifi isn't so happy with it!)

Getting about 40mbps to each of the three adapters I put in.

FYI.
