Got my new gaming system together and it's working great. It was very inexpensive and has played Doom III well in high quality (no lag).
My Specs
AMD64 3000+ winchester
6600gt pcie
Chaintech NF4 Motherboard
512 Ultra pc3200 dimm memory.
250watt Antec power supply
This system outperforms my friends system. Even on games like PainKiller his computer lags horribly when too many enemies get on the screen.
His specs
p4 3.0 854 pin
1024 Kingston pc3200 dimm memory
Asus Motherboard
Asus 5600 256mg (graphics card)
370watt Antec power supply
The 6600gt is a great card. I can run it on a 250watt power supply with no trouble (I'm going to buy a 350watt Antec this year for upgradability). The Winchester is a great cpu to have. All in all you could build my system from the ground up for less than $750.
This was my first build. And for anyone on the fringe about what to buy for a gaming system let my offer some advice.
1) Get a power supply from Antec.
2) Don't overspend on your CPU until you've overspent on your Graphics Card.
3) A 6600gt will play any game out there very well.
4) Winchester CPUs deserve every bit of praise they get.
5) Anandtech is the most helpful forum out there for a first time builder 🙂.
I love my new system and I love the people on these forums who gave me advice and the people in real life who taught me how to build a computer.
Cheers,
Amp
