so i got a great deal on ebay for a 4 month used NEC LCD1770GX from a guy in canada ($230 shipped total). granted it took 22 days to arrive from canada but here are my impressions in case anyone cares for this type of monitor, apparentty its $380 - $70 rebate + tax and shipping at a bunch of places right now.
Now my previous 2 monitors were a planar pl201m 20" lcd, and a planar pl1700-BK 17" lcd.
this monitor basically blows those 2 out of the water. Now the other 2 were fairly good monitors, far better than most of the cheap sunday deal type stuff. But the opticlear coating on this new monitor (its the same as xbrite on sonys) is amazing. Everything seems richer, and the colors seem well like they are all more solid. The blacks are much more black and the whites much more uniform.
My 2 previous monitors, were not nearly as bright and rich. in fact the 20" one towards the end looked like it was fading out in brightness. but wow... image quality on this thing is great. it is a 6bit panel , but honestly i can't tell the difference.
the monitor has some pretty cool adjustments too, it has a height adjustment with something that seems like its pneumatic. and a usb hub. and dvi port was a welcome upgrade over my pl1700-bk which was analog (some cheap vid cards has a bit of a refreshing electromagnetic interferance effect).
anyhow if you use your monitor at night with no sun, get these new opticlear/xbrites monitors. if only they made a 20" or 24"
