Review of Lancool K10 at Hardware Secrets

Pretty good review of a case that is interesting to enthusiasts:
http://www.hardwaresecrets.com/article/523 - I offered to polish Gabe's reviews for a small fee, but he just wanted my factual error corrections for free. Way too much "frontal"... And I wouldn't repeat the silly "Metal Boned" chinglism for any amount of money - it's Steel Framed AFAIC!

Doors are bad for air flow, what do you think this is SPCR 😉

Doors are only bad for airflow if you have fans behind the front bezel. I haven't had such a setup for years......much too noisy, and the restrictions up front are horrible for airflow. There are better setups, which makes the front door valuable for noise reduction.

My objections to front doors.....makes access to the front bay devices more difficult, a pain actually.

Doors are only bad if adequate, indirect intake venting was not provided either by the mfr or the end user.

Looks very nice.
In fact nice enough for me to try to find it somewhere here to consider buying for my planned third PC.

One big mistake in that review though 😛

Metal Boned K10 features five internal bays for hard disk drives, which is more than enough for even very high-end users.

I'm running 8 HDDs in my main rig alone right now & want more...
5 HDDs is nothing.

Gah can i even buy this in Canada?
I don't see it anywhere.

You may have to look for it under either Lancool or Lian Li and the model numbers are: PC-K10A for silver or PC-K10B for black. That may help your searching. Besides, why fret it if it won't even cover your current system much less the prospective one? With only three 5" bays, you put a 4-drive cage in there and no room for an optical. IOW, think before leaping. The CM690 or Enermax Uber Chakra would probably do you better.

n7.....these reviews are aimed at a normal high-end user who builds his own system. I would guess most people who need more than a few drives, construct a server with a bunch of drives, or simply have a NAS or two.

Frankly the problems involved with more than two drives in one computer (the extra heat, the space considerations, the extra fans, the weight, etc) are more than I can handle in a single computer. I'd rather have the extra HD storage in an unused room or closet somewhere.

This Lancool has plenty of internal storage space.....for most people.

Well, i don't HAVE to have a ton of bays in this third PC i'm planning on, but i was more commenting in general that with the way HDDs are cheap these days, & people are filling them up fast with stuff, i'm not sure that it's that abnormal to have a bunch of HDDs.

Maybe i'm using a few more HDDs than the average user, okay 😛

Anyway, i really like the layout/construction of that case though, & the attention to noise-proofing.

Only other case i've seen in that range with that same detail to [lack of] noise is the P182, which i absolutely abhor for its horrible, ineffient layout.

I'm planning on putting together something with absolute silence in mind
Likely a passive PSU like the Antec Phantom or FSP Zen, an Ultima 90 or something similar, a passively cooled video card (lots to choose from these days; it's nice) with a few Noctuas running at very low RPMs.

That case seems to work with my plans, & i like the look & design as well, which is a bonus.

But it doesn't look like it's hit Canuckistan yet, & who knows if it ever will 🙁

BTW, i've seen a number of 5.25" to 3.5" cages/trays mentioned around the forum here, but they all seem to come with fans i'd need to rip out & replace, or are overly pricey.

If i was going to get one, what would you recommend with silence (lack of vibration) in mind.

I don't care about hot swapping or anything fancy.

If you're building with silence in mind, I'd go for two drives maximum. These can be suspended with elastic, mounted in box-like enclosures with aluminum fins, set on foam at the bottom, etc. You run out of space quickly with this setup.

Mounting a drive in a 5.25" bay usually makes it run hot, unless you use a noisy small fan or two.

Laptop drives are soon to go to 500mb....so I've heard. Perfect for internal storage, since they run cool, don't need extra fans, are super quiet, and can be mounted almost anywhere. Put the OS on a fast drive.....everything else on internal laptop drives. Building for silence is a different ball-game.

Well, the odd thing is, i don't mind the clicking noises HDDs make.

It's fan noise & vibration noise i can't stand.

I have my 8 HDDs (one a Raptor, & they aren't quiet as you guys would know) right next to me, & i don't mind the noise they make at all.
So HDDs won't be an issue, it's everything else that is...
Since this system is likely going to be a file server only, i'll be setting the drives to shut off after a bit in Vista anyway, so HDD really isn't a concern.

I'd like for 2.5" drives to be an option for me, but they're too far behind the sizes & prices per GB that desktops offer for them to be a viable option for me anytime soon.

Even 7200 rpm notebook size drives are generally behind your average current desktop drive in performance. The Kublai Kage will come with a Silverstone badged Everflow, nine bladed fan which isn't all that quiet at full speed, but tames well on a controller. Specs: R121225SL, nominal voltage - 12V, working range - 7~13.2V, nominal current - 0.2, power - 2.4W, rpm - 1500, CFM - 6.55, static pressure - 1.42 mmH2O, noise - 30.5 dB(A). However, it does give you about 50% more air (60+ CFM) at top speed than most of the "quiet" fans. It's heavier than many too at around 140g, so you're getting more for your money. 😉 And the Kublai Kage is the only one I know of at a reasonable price that has removable drive trays which can be made hot-pluggable/swappable at $5.00 per drive (CPO5 connector device).

Very few cases out there designed from the get-go with quiet on the top of the list. There is the Antec p1xx and the Arctic Cooling Silentium series in the reasonable price category. Some of the Evercase models do very well in quietude OOB - the Rosewill (Yeong Yang) R5600 series aren't bad either.

It's got to be a tough business trying to squeak a few dollars out "sexying-up" a case review. Very little glamour in that line of work I would think.

The review is a great "installation guide" for anyone who buys the case. I guess that is what case reviews end up being these days, the installation manual that should have come with the case.

Well, before I informed Gabe, he had the card support fingers (KL03 review) as some sort of space separator to keep the air from the two side fans in separate areas... It's not like that info isn't in the manual... And still way to much "frontal" and other *al.
