ATI 4770 release is just a week or two away I believe. For all those wanting to get a 4830, I suggest that you wait.

That said, I don't think much people will buy the 4850 now if all the new 4830 come with 800 shaders.

IMO, if you are an overclocker, then a 640sp (or 800sp) HD4830 is worth $72.00. I'm still waiting to see a review pit an overclocked HD4770 against an overclocked HD4830.

Might make sense now... top to bottom:

Enthusiast: 4870x2
High end: 4890
High-mid-range: 4870 (1gb? I'd guess 512mb) --> becomes the "new" 4850
Mid-range: 4830 (800sp, 640sp gets discontinued)
Mid-range 2 (lower): 4770
Commodity: 43xx/45xx/46xx

Basically just sliding the 4870 512 down into the 4850 spot sounds about right.

Mid-range 2 (lower): 4770

The 4770 is still faster than the 800 SP 4830 (960 GFLOPs vs 920 GFLOPS)

P.S. Is this 800 SP 4830 actually for "real"? That article has me confused.

But has less texture power. The 4830 800 should end up faster slightly when not overclocked.

I'm kind of bummed my 4830 is being kicked to the curb so quickly. I think its an awesome card.

Boo!

That's the way with tech...fortunately or unfortunately depending on how you look at it.

I assume one of these (or the 4770) would spank a 9600GSO? If so I may have to get one to replace the 9600GSO in my HTPC. I've been wanting to play newer games on my tv and I have just not quite been able to. Works great for source games but then again, what doesn't?

Me too. Great card, but the 800SP model would be really nice...
