I'm fairly clueless when it comes to selecting MB/CPU/memory combos - so I selected all the component based on the sticky thread in this section.

http://secure.newegg.com/WishL...47&WishListTitle=jun08

My main fear with this build is overclocking. I've never done it and have no idea how to go about doing it properly. I'd assume it's fairly safe since Dell's gaming PC's are factory overclocked. I was going to buy a Dell (seriously) until I read they may be ending their XPS line and they're still using 8800GT's in their budget gaming rig. Is overclocking fairly idiot proof? :) I'll search around the forums but if anyone can provide an update to date "Overclocking for dummies" that would be great.

My second fear is the CPU cooler - I've always used the factory cooler and never really had to apply thermal paste (I think the last system I built (AMD 3400+) used a pad - not paste... if I recall correctly. I don't want to screw it up.

I may order the case from a different vendor since newegg's price is fairly high. Also, that xigmatek retention bracket is out of stock, anyone know a reputable vendor I can order that from?

Is there anything you guys would change!?

Thanks!

Looks like great hardware selections. Put it all together properly and you'll be extremely pleased.

Thermal paste is easy. You can get really fancy and detailed instructions if you google it, but basically with the xigmatech you just put a thin line of the thermal paste of your choice on each of the heatpipes on the bottom of the cooler, and set it in place.

The xigmatech cooler is pretty light for one of that size, and the stock pushpins never bothered me much. Not sure where else to look for the retention bracket.

First of, VERY expensive case, why not a antec p182, antec 900, or even a cm590 ? Rest of the build looks good, although I'd get a different PSU. That particular one isn't as quiet as it could be. I still like this PSU: http://www.buy.com/prod/corsai...loc/101/203270716.html very quiet and modular.

You could consider changing the mobo, to x38 for a few more bucks, giving you dual PCI-e 16x slots, so you can crossfire your HD4850 with a HD4870 or even a HD4870X2 down the road. Or tune it down to a cheaper motherboard, like this one: http://www.newegg.com/Product/...x?Item=N82E16813131275

And yes, overclocking is fairly dummy proof, you'd have to be really dumb to break something, or damage your CPU in some way. If you read up on some overclocking guides ( look in the CPUs and Overclocking forum ) then you should be good to go. Applying thermal paste is also very easy, if you order arctic silver 5 you could look up on how to apply it at their own website.

I recently built a new computer with that same CPU cooler. I can tell you that is a great product.

Great feedback guys. Much appreciated.

@Marc
About the case, I have a P180 and I like it, but wanted to try something new. It's kind of a toss up between the 182, 900 or 1200 for me. Antec 1200 is ~$160 elsewhere (still expensive, but less than newegg). Thanks for the info on the motherboard!

I second the choice for a CM 590. Just built a new system with one and it was really easy to work with and has tons of room. I have the P5Q Deluxe that I've had no problems with. All i have left is a vid card and then it's done.
