My friend can easily afford the 8800GTX, but I sincerely doubt the given PSU (which isn't customizable) could support it. Someone said the XPS 410 only has a 375 watt PSU.

When building with the XPS 710, the total came to $2400 with the 8800GTX which is way beyond my friends budget.

He'll be using this computer until he graduates high school (3 years) and does not plan on upgrading. The only games he'll be playing are WoW and SOME battlefield (only because I'll force him to.)

He also selected dual drives, which I have no idea what those are: Dual Drives: 48x Combo + 16x DVD+/-RW w/ dbl layer write capable

The other is a single CD/DVD Burner + DVD R/W.

thanks!

Suggestions?

edit: My friend wanted a 500 gig hard drive and 4 gigs of memory, but I felt that would put too much pressure on the PSU. Plus, I don't think 4 gigs of memory will have much impact on performance, if any.

Should I green-light the 500 gig HD or tell him to stick with the 320?

Seeing as how you both know nothing about PSUs, I'm not sure how you are qualified to make this statement. And the answer is no, it won't put too much pressure on your PSU.

Seems your knowledge of Vista is equally lacking. Vista uses ALL available system memory to cache frequently used programs and files (it's called SuperCache). 32-bit Vista can only address 3.25GB of RAM, but the extra RAM does help. He needs 64-bit Vista if he wants to use all 4GB of RAM.

Again, you're not qualified to make this statement, since you have no knowledge about Dell's PSUs, or the PSU requirements of said configuration. But the answer is yes, the PSU of the XPS 410 will support a single 8800GTX.

Yes, and Bamacre can confirm this.

A better question is what do we have to do to get you to stop making annoying, repetitive threads?

I read somewhere the 500 gig hd (I think dell uses seagate) is a super psu whore, and based off my assumption that the xps 410 uses a 375 watt psu (based on what another anandtech member said) i advised my friend accordingly.

I'm only 15...

The XPS 410 stock PSU will run an 8800 GTX flawlessly. Dual 12V rails @ 18A each.

Hell, Dell even offers the 8800 GTX with the XPS 410.

Trust me, I know my Dell systems. ;)

Hey bam, any chance we could get a heads-up before you place your next Dell order? I've been thinking about buying stock, and it'd be nice to grab some just before another record sales quarter. ;)

My lips are sealed, sorry. :D

My advice is buy Intel, but then again, that advice started when it was $20/share.

Where did you get the money all of a sudden?

Is your friend sure he has the money? lol (sorry, I just had to crack that one.)

I dunno... it may not handle all the extra trial-ware either :(
