<< Site is HAMMERED!!! >>

from the site:
NOTE: TRAFFIC IS EXTREMELY HEAVY - WE APOLOGIZE FOR THE DELAY AND ANY INCONVENIENCE THIS CAUSES. We would suggest trying back later tonight.

sort of remind me of that commerical with UPS when a new online store opened up and the group watching the counter go up... and up... and up.

also:
Don't forget - 10 customers will be randomly chosen to receive a free Afterburner! (i.e. if you are chosen: your order will be free if you ordered one kit, if you ordered two kits or more you will receive one of them for free.)

This is really hot, or will be when the online store recovers from the traffic. Plus Apparently these guys are in Iowa. Hey, I'M IN IOWA!

I'm going to wait and see what people have to say about theirs before buying one. Also, if Nintendo releases their own backlit GBA soon, I'll probably go that route.

This is amazingly cool! I know I should wait until people actually try this but I think I'm gonna go ahead and order anyway. About the cost, its kinda a lot but not much more than a single game so I think I could handle it.

I heard one of the reasons that they dropped the price recently was to clear way for a Plus version with a built in light. Personally I have only had a problem with Castlevania. Most other games worked fine with the wormlight I have.

An ode to our lovely Web server
Much to our surprise, today (as all of you surely noticed by now) our dedicated server with pair.com could not handle the amount of traffic we had anticipated. Our shopping cart software, Miva Merchant, appears to be much more of a resource hog than we anticipated. That's an understatement - you guys reduced that server to a pile of molten ashes in a period of minutes! :)

I really apologize for the now apparent lack of preparation on my part in seeing that this was not a problem. It's obvious to me now that I shouldn't have given an exact time for the preorders to start.. or would it really have mattered?

In any case, we are upgrading to an even faster server immediately. Don't worry about not getting in on the preorder - the server spiked 5 minutes after I released the URL and very few orders actually went through (to be exact, 1 person made it all the way through the order process).

So once again, I'm sorry for the inconvenience - check back tonight or tomorrow when hopefully our server capacity will be sufficient...

Thanks for your understanding!

I'd like to point out that this kit is for dismantling your gba and hooking up this thing. You have to solder and strip wires and basically invalidate your warranty. And it's more than 1/2 the price of the bloody gba!!! You're all nuts for wanting this thing (IMO)! I'll go sit under a lamp instead.

You're at Anandtech, dude. We're ABOUT dismantling things and voiding warranties :D

In all seriousness, this kit, IMO, is going to make the GBA what it should have been to begin with. Nuts or not, I've been waiting for this for months.

I'm looking foward to chopping up my GBA, no sarcasm. Yes, the cost of the kit is more than half the price of a new GBA, but well worth it IMO. The purpose of the light isn't just to make the screen easier to see in non-optimum lighting, it's so you can play in total darkness without a dongle hanging off of the system--I know I don't always have the option of playing underneath a lamp.

The only reason I bought my GBA was so i'd have something to play on the road and such, but the way the screen is that's pretty much impossible. I find myself huddling under a lamp anytime I wanna play Castlevania (this game is incredible, I have played it more than anything else including CS since I bought it :p), this kit is exactly what I need.

for you GBA modders check here linky link for some other stuff people have done to their GBA's. Hmmm, i wonder if he was ready for this much demand for the Afterburner, lol. I've always been a fan of Nintendo but they have made some questionable product decisions. I mean really what were they thinking not putting in a backlight, come on!

Won't happen. According to Nintendo's engineers it is "impossible to provide a backlit LCD and still keep decent battery life." Bunch of losers.

This mod has been eagerly awaited for by 1000's of people. The screen is so bad that I'm not even using mine until I get this light in. I think we're all aware of what it'll take to install it.

There's a difference between impossible and cost effective. If Nintendo added 15$ or more to the intial cost of gba @ 115$ or more, it would have really hurt sales. Plus battery life is cut in half by the mod, parents aren't big on shelling out tons on batteries. The majority of the gba market is playing in lit rooms, or outside, not dank dorms.

A lit room isn't even enough...you practically have to have a desklamp on the damn thing to see it correctly. That's why those crappy addon lights have been the #1 selling accessory since it came out.
