Reverting OSX using Time Machine

If I upgrade a machine to Yosemite and need to revert to Mavericks for some reason later (assuming I have a recent backup), what is the best procedure to do this?

I've never done this before but from what I understand, it is relatively straightforward?

It is preferred (but not necessary) to have your Time Machine backup on a separate drive than the drive you are restoring on. This is so you don't have to worry about losing the backup if you need to reformat.

A full Time Machine backup will be able to restore OS X and everything included; even on a formatted drive.
