Reverse Seasonal Affective Disorder

Inspired by GuideBot's comment in this thread.

I've always been a winter person. I prefer overcast, rain, etc. I just chalked it up to preference and personality however. A while ago I was studying SAD and learned that there is Reverse SAD as well, where people experience SAD symptoms during the summer, and are fine (or have manic euphoria) in the winter. It's still a relatively unresearched area of SAD but it's of great interest to me.

I was curious if anyone else thought they might suffer Reverse SAD, and if so what sort of area did you grow up in? One of the keys is that it's not about acclimatization. In other words, I don't suffer from it because I grew up in the northwest and am used to certain types of weather. I'd be interested to find someone that grew up in a warm, sunny climate but may suffer Reverse SAD.

I get sad during the winter, mainly because everything is really empty. I live in Chattanooga, TN, and all around me there are mountains full of trees and forest. I love to hike and camp in them, but during the winter it all seems so sad. I love fall, spring, and summer, though...Never heard of SAD until now (aside from social anxiety disorder, which I have..)

Seasonal Affective Disorder?

I think the greater danger is SIAD. SEXUAL INTERCOURSE AFFECTIVE DISORDER. Euphoria if you're gettin some. Act like a beayotch when you're not. That being said, it seems as if there are quite a few women at the office suffering from SIAD. Where the hell is Sally Struthers when you really need a PSA???

My favorite seasons are fall and spring. My least favorites are winter and summer. I guess I have MODERATE SAD (I like moderate weather)

I feel the same way now. I'm planning to move to Juneau but jobs are hard to find.

I really just hate the sunny weather in a city. What's so nice about a sunny day when all you have is concrete? Even more baffling is when folks move to the desert for the "good weather". It's like people have no sense of the environment they're in-- all their brains understand is "sunshine good".

I live in Vancouver which has pretty much identical climate to Seattle. And I LOVE IT in winter. It is raining right now :) :) :) rain makes me oh so happy that it can't be normal.

If they convince you that you have a disorder then they can sell you a drug to help with the symptoms.

Well, they can try. I don't believe in drugs for very much. I do think this happens though. But I also realize how delicate our systems are, and that many of the various disorders actually have very firm physiological basis.

Summer > Spring > Fall > Winter

Not to say that all seasons don't have their niceties, just my order of preference.

If you believe that being in that type of weather will improve your quality of life, then you should try to live your life somewhere that will immerse you in that weather. Medical condition or not, it is a real situation for you if you decide that it is and you should take steps to address it for yourself.
