Do you know about this chip?

Is vaporware or is real?

Rumors say tha this chip will be presented on December and will hit the market next summer.

The default answer of my spy in the 3DFX world is just a "No comment"

Amigamerlin.... hmmm... is that the same guy that said on the pvr-net forums that he was going to release the Kyro 2 SE BIOS for Kyro 2 users so they could get enT&L working? That never seemed to happen... he didn't reply. :(
This is where it happened http://www.pvr-net.com/cgibin/forum/ikonboard.cgi?s=3de411c86161ffff;act=ST;f=3;t=317.

Power VR have accelerated the design of Series 5, but we still don't know who will fab the chips. Imagination Tech may outsource it...

Cheers

The first I heard of it was a few months ago when the "Revenge" name was bandied about by a few of the people behind the 3dhq site, that were working on new drivers for the Voodoo line of graphics cards.
They claimed to have apresentation of the "Revenge" ready and an "Official Annluncement" was set to be in about two months.

Of course that was about 3 months ago they were saying that, and their "official announcement" hasnt appeared and they've not said a word of the "Revenge" since then. Just lately they've started re-iterating their promises though, this time claiming a December announcement.

Personally I put absolutely NO faith at all in this hypotehtical "Revenge" graphcis chip.
Even the name of "Revenge" would be just perfect for the few remaining 3dfx loyalist's. They can nicely claim the "Revenge" can get revenge on nVidia for buying out 3dfx.
Granted nVidia had little to do with the companies fall.... but they need someone to blame and nVidia is the perfect scapegoat for them.

My question is... if this proposed "Revenge" exists.... who is designing it and how?
Most of the ex-3dfx engineers jumped ship to nVidia... a few have drifted off to ATi, 3DLabs, Appian and the like however.
So it certainly isnt the old 3dfx staff.
3dhq hinted their behind it.... but only one of them have shown they are anything beyond software engineers, and that one has mentioned he did not have anything to do with the design. Plus they most definitely don't have the hundreds of millions of dollars necessary to design such an ambitious project as the 'Revenge' is claimed to be.... let alone the resources, or man-power to attempt something of the like.

The "Revenge" is also supposedly based around old 3dfx technology... but nVidia owns the IP and trademarks behind what's left of 3dfx technology, so that's clearly not possible.

Everything points to one thing IMHO.... the desperate desires and imaginings of one deprived of his favourite manufacturer.
I've not seen anything about the "Revenge" claims that has any real validity to it.

While I enjoyed my old 3DFX cards, especially the cool SLI setup, I'm not sure I'm sad they're gone. I remember the nightmare of trying ta get all the damn drivers and such outta the registry so I could dare ta use a different card:(! Recently I went from a Nvidia to ATI and it was a piece of cake. Maybe it's just that in the old days that was necessary but I don't think you had near the hassle when ya wanted ta dump the Matrox or ATI card drivers for something else as ya did with the Voodoo line. That said they did have some pretty cool cards and marketing ploys didn't they LOL:D!

There's a few stories going around in the uk computer industry that there will be a new product based on a chipset from PowerVR due for release in March. However there's no firm information on whether or not it's PC based.

i think it was VIA who bought PowerVR a while back. they might not have bought the company, maybe just a core design for integration in a new northbridge.

and while we are on the topic of VIA, has anyone heard anything else about the columbia or zenotrope chips from S3/VIA?

No one has bought PowerVR. It's the graphics division of ST Microelectronics (aka Kyro) that was going to be sold off. The outcome of the sale of the grahpics division is not public knowledge though (VIA did pop up as one of the possible contenders). PowerVR are working on the Series 5 tech, but I doubt very much that is will use the "Kyro" name.

I heard that Voodoo owns. Of course, this was five or six years ago.

PowerVR was not for sale, it was never for sale!! Only the Kyro tech from STM was being sold off, because they decided to leave the graphics bussiness as it accounted for a tiny portion of their profits. We can only make guesses as to who has bought the Kyro patents and tech, since nothing has been officially confirmed, I assume that the interested parties are still in discussion with ST Micro.

LoL yah I had a tough time deciding whether I should buy a Kyro 2 or to just spend a few bucks more and buy out the whole company ;)
