Reusing old CPU on ASUS A8N-VM Motherboard

I have an ASUS A8N-VM Motherboard that I want to install on a new computer with an old
an old AMD Athlon XP 2800+. I also bought an AMD 3000+ Socket 939. So I have a few questions.

Can I use the 2800+ instead and return the 3000+? Can I buy a socket 939 adapter if I need it for the 2800+. is the 2800+ an AMD64 also? If I reuse the 2800+ how would I wipe off the old thermal paste to apply the new one? Would the Vantec thermal paste I have left over work fine? Are there any guides on installing old CPUs I can use as a reference?

Thanks

It depends on what you mean by old.

If the AMD 2800+ is a Throughbred core, it is a Socket A chip,
which will NOT fit/work with the ASUS motherboard.

If the AMD 2800+ is a Barton core, that is a Socket A chip,
which will NOT fit/work with the ASUS motherboard.

If the AMD 2800+ is a Newcastle core, then it is a Socket 754,
which WILL fit/work with the ASUS motherboard, and is a
64-bit processor.

If you need help identifying the CPU Type, post the numbers (all of them)
that are on the black label on the CPU.

To clean the old thermal grease off you will want to use
a cleaner that does not leave a residue when clean, but is
not to harsh on the chip (lacquer thinner, white gas(Naphta/lighter fluid) etc.)
using as little as possible to get the job done.

The sponge-tipped sticks from Radio-Shack dipped and squeezed of excess fluid
work nicely.
