Reusing old CPU on ASUS A8N-VM Motherboard

I have an ASUS A8N-VM Motherboard that I want to install on a new computer with an old
an old AMD Athlon XP 2800+. I also bought an AMD 3000+ Socket 939. So I have a few questions.

Can I use the 2800+ instead and return the 3000+? Can I buy a socket 939 adapter if I need it for the 2800+. is the 2800+ an AMD64 also? If I reuse the 2800+ how would I wipe off the old thermal paste to apply the new one? Would the Vantec thermal paste I have left over work fine? Are there any guides on installing old CPUs I can use as a reference?

Thanks

Athlon XP = 32-bit CPU without an onboard memory controller
Athlon64 = 32 and 64-bit CPU with an onboard memory controller.

The two are VERY different electronically, it's not just a form factor difference.

To remove old thermal goo, use PURE acetone or rubbing alcohol (the 91% stuff). No nail polish remover - it's not pure acetone, and it can lead residue on the chip. Use a soft tissue dipped in the acetone or alcohol, and gently get the compound off - you'll probably use several tissues to get the chip clean. Do the same to the heatsink.

Remember, the last time you had a workable adapter was Socket370 to Slot1. As CPU's get faster and faster, tolerances for signals get lower and lower, which means that, even if an adapter was theoretically possible, it still wouldn't work because the signal would get degrated going through the adapter.
