reusing a heatsink ??

I installed my 1Ghz T-bird the other night, without bothering to look at the L1 bridges to see if they were unlocked ... so now I need to remove the HS/Fan and check. I was wondering about how to go about reusing the HS, and if I would need to clean anything off the die on removal? I found some info on cleaning and/or lapping the HS, but no mention of thermal solution on the die. On trying to re-install, I have some old thermal paste from installation of a past Socket 7 board and was wondering if that is sufficient, or if that "phase change" compound on the HS is the only solution.
