After looking at the gaggles of plastic shopping bags I keep below my kitchen sink, I'm thinking about switching to the reusuable shopping bags. I can get them for like 99¢ at several local stores.... gonna buy 5 or so and try em. Now hopefully I can remember to bring them when I go shopping. :)

You can't carry more than a couple of paper bags at a time... I can carry 10-12 plastic bags at a time if I use both hands.

Yep but the trick is remembering to bring them to the grocery store. We leave ours in the car.

Albertsons sells a $0.99 reusable shopping bag and you receive $0.05 back everytime you use it. We've used ours 4 times so far.

Nope, but I do use the plastic grocery bags to carry my lunch to work everyday. I go through one bag a week, and then recycle it.

No but we recycle all the plastic bags we get from places. There are a few stores you can take them to that do that.

I bought some of the ikea ones. Not for when i go to the store, but because they're great for hauling things back and forth to college.

I've got a bunch of green canvas ones from my local grocer. I love them. I even bought a couple sectioned bottle backs for their build-your-own 6-pack :D

No. I know it's "hip" now or suppose to be, but I just remember from childhood all the "unhip" that use to carry them.

I just try my best not to ask for bags for small items nowadays. That or just get one bag at one place and stuff everything else in that or into my purse.

Or plastic. As long as its thrown away after one use, I don't really care which material.

Wow, I was also going to post that the trick is to remember bringing them. But in my case that means I forget to put them back into the car. I have forgotten to bring them in from the car, but in those cases I am the sort who holds up the line while I run back and get them.

My sister bought two nice, big hemp bags for groceries. The ones they sell for 99 cents seem pretty flimsy.

Nope, usually plastic. Throwing the majority of them out and saving a few to take my lunch in. I can't believe people actually pay for shopping bags.

Plastic. Then I toss them.

Then I go out and cut down a few trees and put them in the dumpster as well.

After that, I blow a hole in an oil tanker.

Yup, except I didn't get them at the store - my mom makes them out of old clothing. They're quite nice - good sized handles, pretty hefty weight capacity (better than any paper or plastic bag), washable, and those that were made from worn out pants even have pockets on the outside.
I've got 4 of them, which have much more capacity than the 99 cent things I've seen at stores. I use them every time I go shopping at a place that uses plastic bags. I will still use paper bags at stores that have them, as they can come in handy for other things.

Guess what, you pay for those plastic bags. It's integrated right into the price of the items. Those bags come into the stores as a full pallet, and the store of course has to pay for them. That pallet needs to be handled by workers, then stored somewhere, occupying space which could be otherwise used for profitable merchandise. Time needs to be expended keeping the bag dispensers at the cash registers filled. The store then passes the "savings" on to you. ;)

 Paper bags suck. I reuse my plastic bags for trash bags, but I have entirely too many. I've been thinking about getting the reusable grocery bags. How do they know you didn't steal them though?

When I'm buying soda and they put 2 2-liters in each bag, I tell them to put 3 in each bag. They never rip in the short time I'm carrying them from the car to the house.

Actually, I split the cost along with every other customer - even the tree huggers.
