Reuse retail heatsink?

I need to replace my parents current motherboard. I want to keep the cpu and heatsink. The heatsink came with the cpu in a retail box. Is there any reason why I should not use this heatsink/fan?

I'm not going to overclock. The cpu is a P4 1.7Ghz

if you have been having temp problems, this would be a great opportunity to upgrade. otherwise, same cpu, same hsf.

Ok thanks.

I was reading the intel site and they said that they don't recommend reusing the heatsink. Was just double checking to see if they were just being picky.

I can't remember what to use to clean the cpu and heatsink. Is it rubbing alcohol, paint thinner?

You'll want some Arctic Silver 5 or similar to replace the thermal paste you're getting rid of. For cleaning purposes, you can either buy one from Arctic Silver or use the highest % isopropyl alcohol you can find, preferably 90%+.

EDIT: And yes rubbing alcohol contains isopropyl alcohol normally, but at lower %s like 70%. You'll want the purest isopropyl you can find, but I'd rather just buy the Acrtic kit.

I think some hardware stores sell a high purity isopropyl alcohol. I bought some 99.2% stuff at a local hardware store. Worked great on the heatsink I just had to reattach.
