returning the KDL-46EX711

IGBT

It's going back. Uneven edge lit back lighting resulting in washed out color on RH/LH sides of the screen. The black appears a dark blue at times. Strange halos on the bottom LH side of the screen. Overall color is dull despite calibration. My 40" bravia, four years old with CCFL lighting is more pleasing to watch with no back lighting hot spots. Lighting is very uniform in the older panel. I noticed back lighting anomalies in the store (costo) demo whan I decided to go back and take a closer look at the demo to see if it was just my panel or something in common. Starting to wonder if LED edge lighting is inferior to CCFL?? Found many complaints around the net about LED/LCD lighting problems. Surprised Sony would let something this objectionable out of the house. Anybody else notice problems with edge lit LED/LCD's or find CCFL more pleasing to the eye??

I never understood the obsession with the thickness of the TV. I don't know about you guys, but I don't stand there and admire the profile of the TV. One big drawback to thin items is they are very hard to fix, if even possible.

And if you are really obsessed by thinness, go front projection. The screen is a lot thinner than a TV

sounds like i made the right choice. the ex710 (non-costco version) was also under consideration for me.
instead, i went with a toshiba WX800U which is LED (edge) and the blacks are amazing. little to no banding, back light bleed, clouding, unevenness, etc.

the 46wx800u is only $1299 with 2 free 3d glasses and bd player at amazon.

the panel that the EX 711 was supposed to replace but went back into service is the Bravia KDL40s20L1. Sad state of affairs when the EX711 get's blown away by a four year old CCFL/LCD panel. Sony!! What happened??

returned the KDL-46EX711 this morning at costco. Noticed a price drop on same model. It's now 1099.00. I can't advise buying it. Costco floor worker said there have been a high return rate on this model for similar complaints. I've come to the conclusion that LED lighting of any sort is inferior to CCFL. LED's have poor color balance and poor light diffusion characteristics compared to CCFL. I'm going to skip present generation of LED panels and see what shows up in the next few years. My existing 40" S.Series Bravia will do for the foreseeable future.

update: costco has a 42 " Panasonic TC 42 px24 on sale for 545.00 applied my 399.00 costc0 cash back and got it for 146.00 plus tax. What a deal. Couldn't by it out of the trunk of a car for that price. Used the Am express and ended up with a 3 year warranty to boot. The plasma is total eye candy. No motion artifacts arse kicking contrast and no off angle viewing problems. Only complaint: doesn't have audio out rca jacks for my audio syst. Need to get a optical cable or converter. Grabbed audio from the analog out from my bluRay. Audio comes from the built in speakers when watching TV turner. It scanned the over the air HD and found 40 HDTV channels mostly comming off Sutro Tower here in SF. So I got 90 days to decide if I want to keep it. So far Plasma is many rungs above LCD and nearly as good as a high quality CRT.
