Text display on this monitor is simply too granular for my tastes. It lacks the sharpness of my KDS 195TF, although I give it high marks for uniform color balance, which was a problem with the KDS.

Got any 19" CRT recommendations in the $300 (+ or - $50) price range? Text display must be very crisp. Bonus if it comes in black!

The granular pattern you describe is an indication to me that you have a monitor with really good sharp focus. Only good focused monitors suffer from this form of moiré. Try using the moiré reduction controls (these are really de-focus controls. Odds are you can make your CM721F look like your KDS by defocusing it a little bit.

Fiddling with the moiré was the first thing I tried, mainly to elimate what can only be described as slight "moiré tendrils" from the edge of both sides of the screen. The pixels on the KDS resemble what's on my LCD monitor here at work: they're square, with very little "black space" in between. The pixels on the CM721F are round, and there's definitely more "black space" between them. However, I will fiddle with the moiré even more on the CM721F.

Someone suggested that it could be my video card, a Gainward GeForce3 Ti200. I've got a ATI Radeon 64 VIVO and will pair the CM721F with it to see if there's any difference.

In any case, still wondering if someone has any 19" CRT recommendations. :)

Since you are used to looking at an aperture grill (195TF) you may want to consider another AG monitor, instead of a shadow mask like the CM721F. This explains why the pixels look square to you, although the text may not be as sharp as on the Hitachi.

This is my recommendation
