If I try to do that, but actually just want to exchange my unit for another same unit, will I have to mess with my Verizon account? Or can I just switch over?

you will need to call verizon and give them the code on the back of the new phone to activate it.

You have to deal with Verizon.

If your unit is defected you are SOL. You have to buy another unit.

QFT. Every phone/PDA has a unique indentifying # on it's chip. (ESN?)

Cell phones in the states suck ass big time. The rest of the world uses SIM cards. If it's a valid SIM, the phone is good to go. You can take a SIM card out of one phone, stick it in another and you're golden.

You might not be able to exchange it if you got it at a discount, I don't know Costco's policy. If you have insurance, and the phone is broken, make a claim. If the phone has something else wrong with it (non physical or water damage related), see if you can get a warranty replacement, hit up a VZW store to find out.

Once you get the new phone, call customer service and we'll switch the phone on your account and activate it.
