Returning a hard drive....loud?

Anyone ever tried to return a hard drive cauze it started screeching? Nothing else wrong with it, it just is insanely loud!!! Loudest component in the system...

Western Digital 20GB 7200 RPM btw...

Yup, 7 120 GB WD drives so far. First one got noisy, then it failed outright a few weeks later. The other six got returned as soon as they started screeching. Damned things gave me a headache! I got no complaints from the WD or Sony (a couple of them were OEM equipment in Sony digital studio systems) about my requests to return the drives. WD seems to have produced quite a batch of "screamers" for a while there. I hope the string of bad luck is over.

Thanks prosiac. Might not even be worth the effort for a tiny 20 Gigger, but I like to use those drives for "hand me down" systems (wife, kid, in-laws, etc.)

A penny saved is a penny earned. Good luck. I was astonished at never getting any argument about it. Seemed like they must have known already that some of their drives were doing this.

Excessive noise is unacceptable. Please visit our web site at the address below in order to create either an Advanced or a Standard RMA on line, for the warranty exchange of your hard drive.

Will be sending it back 🙂 Gotta find a temporary replacement...

That's cool. It's nice when businesses take responsibility for the quality of their products. (So many of them seem to do anything they can to shine their customers on when there's a problem.)

Better luck on the replacement drive!

I'd think that a screeching sound can not be a good thing. I've got a system with 3 WD hard drives, two of which are 7200 rpms - I can't hear the hard drives working over the system's fans. They aren't silent running, but they aren't Vantec Tornado's either.
