Returned my PS3

I have an xbox 360 and I have a PS2. I picked up a PS3 because of the good deals and the way i looked at it was that it was a good bluray player and upconverting dvd player with the added benefit of playing games. I have a 100" HD projection system and the blu ray looked great.

Why did i return it then?

Well, three weeks ago, when i bought it, it looked like by xmas hd dvd would be dead.

No longer is that the case

with paramount and dreamworks switching (even with the money that changed hands) the war is on. I'm not saying blu ray will lose, but rather that its going to continue to be split for a while. I dont want to buy both a ps3 and an hd dvd player. I said at the beginning i would wait until it seemed clear who would win and i'm sticking to that.

Secondly, some of the games that looked cool: resistance, lair, heavenly sword...well, they sucked. I'm sorry if people think I'm trolling or flaming something...i'm not. I am the furthest thing from a fan boy. I like all games, i dont care if its xbox, ps, nintendo, pc, or board games, i like things that are fun. Lair was awful, and aside from the cutscenes, the graphics were anything but amazing, heavenly sword was brutally boring, resistance was cod all over again, and i got bored of those games a long time ago. Looking to the future, all i see are multiple platform games with a bit of Metal Gear thrown in. Metal gear is not enough for a 500 dollar system, in my book.

I really really really hope that i buy a ps3 again in the future. Having it for just a few weeks showed me what a really awesome OS it has, how many features they put in, how open it all is and they update much better than the xbox.

But until a winner of the high def disk format is clear or until they have games that are totally exculsive and revolutionary, then I will not buy it again.

Maybe I'm getting older or maybe i've played too many games, but I am so absolutly bored with sequals and derivative gaming. Gears was new. Bioshock was new. I think that Assasins Creed will be cool. I think rock band will be one of the most enjoyable party games ever. I see mass effect and think that it will be a great RPG. I dont even care about Halo (but i'll rent it to finish the story).

When i look at what all the systems have to offer...well, PS3 doesn't offer much at all, regardless of how cool the OS is.

I'm thinking about getting one around Christmas-ish, if they actually manage to make more than 1 "AAA" for it; I'm still waiting for the 1.

But without further ado, here are the standard canned responses you will soon be hearing:

"You aren't trying hard enough, it's a Blue ray player, watch some movies."
"It could run Linux, use it like a computer."
"Games are bad cause they are Xbox ports, down with the Box."
"It's you, PS3 kicks ass, end of story".
"Gaming isn't for you."
"You're a Xbox 360 fanboy."

If you missed the sarcasm alarm, they above are almost direct quotations of statements made by fanboys on the PS3 forums in response to a post similar to yours.

you named 3 games that suck yet 2 have not even come out yet. LOL, sounds like fanboy to me.

i don't care if you don't like PS3, but to say it sucks because a game that has not yet been released "sucks" is just stupid.

Which two did i say sucked that I haven't played?

I never said metal gear sucked...and I've played lair and heavenly sword...so i dont know what you're referring to.

Go to best buy in pasadena, ca and see that they have the full version of lair out to play. I played for about 30 or 40 minutes.

And, like you said, the heavenly sword demo is out. Sure, its only 5 minutes, but it was enough to see that it isn't a game for me.

I hope i was clear that i'm not saying the PS3 is terrible or that no one should get it or that the games are so bad that no one will like them. But for me, and the things I was looking for, it wasn't right. And that was based off of owning it. I dont care about the name on the system or anything like that. Hell, i owned a dreamcast! lol.

I like mine. I've yet to play any PS3 game or watch Blu-ray movie.
I'm still content watching dvds and playing ps2 games. It's the best upconverting dvd player I've seen.

If the PS3 isn't "right" for him at this point, why does that make him a 360 fanboy?

It seems like all the PS3 owners have nothing better to do except call others 360 fanboys if they say ANYTHING bad about the PS3.

I love my 360 but I'm not set on just one system. If the PS3 eventually comes around with a lot of good games and a better multiplayer system I'll be all over it. But for pure gaming the 360 is on top right now.

OK, Lair may be crappy to some people, Heavenly Sword may not be everyone's type of game (though it's getting good reviews, unlike Lair), but you can not say that Resistance sucked. Sure, it's not the most original FPS (although the weapons and rage mode for Chimera were pretty unique, I thought), but it's an extremely solid game. You just can't deny that. I don't see how an 8.5-9/10 average score can make a sucky game. If this game "sucked", then most other FPS games suck right along with it. I haven't played a more fun FPS since the original Halo.

I really don't like how you judge Heavenly Sword based on a demo, and Lair on 30 minutes of play. Are you really giving the games a chance? No.

Also, you're missing out on Warhawk. Now, if you call that game crappy, I will smack you in the face.

Based on why you returned it, I don't think anyone really cares.

I love resistance. My friend brings his PS3 over here so we can play it online. Like you said, not the most original, but still a quality game.
I'm actually considering getting warhawk even though I don't have a PS3. I'll just be able to play it when he brings the PS3 over :D
I don't think anyone can based their opinion of Heavenly sword on a demo that short. It took longer to "install" the game than it did to finish the demo. But Im looking foward to playing it.

I still don't think you can say his reasons for returning it are stupid. not everyone likes every game, not even the ones that get review scores of 10/10.

No where did i say resistance "sucked". I said that it was like COD all over again...which it was if you replace nazis with the alien/mutant people. The chimera were cool baddies, and the graphics were really really good in resistance. But there was nothing about it that blew me away. It was solid. for sure. Enough that i wanted to play through the whole game (which was also, by the way, a really nice length. i never felt it was too short). However, when i finished the campaign i had no desire to play it again. Unlike bioshock or gears, where as soon as i finished it i wanted to play again.

I'm not a big multiplayer aside from co op. i like story. I didn't try warhawk, and from all i've read it is a great title. Probably a 'best of system' type of game for ps3. It just isn't for me.

i am anything but a fan boy. Like i said, i've owned just about every system thats every been released and enjoyed them all. For the price, there just wasnt enough for me to justify keeping the ps3. Just like at the price of the blu ray and hd dvd players, there isn't enough reason to buy both.

And to say that the demo wasn't enough to judge heavenly sword on: i played it three times, learned how to use the stances, and at the least got the gist of the game and it felt like a cooler dynasty warriors/devil may cry type of game: namely lots of pointless combat.

I really look forward to the time when the PS3 is a must own system because i think there is a lot of potential then. Until that time, i think if anyone would be unbiased they'd see that my points are valid, especially given the statments about my taste. thanks for reading, and I'm sorry if i offended anyone with regards to their PS3 systems. I dont think anyone is 'dumb' or 'stupid' for having it, especially if the games out are ones they love. it just wasnt for me and i gave my resons.

It's your choice of course, and there's definitely not much extra gaming value in a PS3 for someone who already has a 360 and a PS2, and plays cross-platform games on the 360 instead. You even have the PS2 to keep you company when the 360 red-rings.

You're missing the chance to see hundreds of movies in 1080p instead of 480i, but many people don't care enough about picture quality for that to matter.

I rent from Netflix, so even if HD-DVD does manage to stop losing I'll only be out the cost of the PS3. Once I have a Falcon 360 I'll probably pick up its HD-DVD too so I can rent those movies as well.

you brought up the biggest point: The xbox, in my opinon, has really screwed up when it comes to reliabilty. I dont really care about the extended warrenty...they HAD to do that. its the fact that the PS3, which is much more complicated, as it uses much more state of the art components (the xbox is basically a regular computer with the exception of the shared ram) and the xbox still can't hang with the ps3 reliability.

however, i do have an HTPC for upconverting my regular dvds, so i'm not missing out on that, either. I also play games on my computer.

But thanks for being able to stay nuetral. I dont understand "fanboy-ism" and especially at some place like ATOT or avsforum, i'd expect a lot more mature discussion.

I debated over buying the PS3 at $350, but chose not to for pretty much the same reasons as yours. I just don't care enough about picture quality to spend $350 on a Blu-Ray player. I'll wait until it has games that I want (that I can't get on my 360).

The only "state of the art" component the PS3 has is it's cell processor, which is barely even being utilized by any games. The rest are just regular PC components.

I never figured out why they scrimp on the RAM so much in consoles, both the 360 and PS3 only have 512mb. I would think at least 1gb would be the minimum.

What I said was true, you are nobody to tell me to post or not. Nobody here is.

Your opinion is not fact. Dont act like it is. Games arent even out yet, yet you claim they suck. Dont try the "I played the HS demo" line. It was a 5 min demo, if that. Of course, all reviews of it are great, just as the reviews for Fall of Man are. So you're bucking the trend there.

What do you want everyone to do, buy a 360 that will have a good chance of crapping out on them, and be without a system for months, and lose money on it? No, Ill take your stance, and wait till its a "must own system".

I think it goes without saying that when someone posts their impressions of a game it's their opinion. I don't see how he's acting like his opinion is fact. Nothing to get your panties in a wad here. ;) If a company wants you to buy their game, they ought to put out a demo that's more than 5 minutes long. I don't buy many games without playing them first, and I'd much rather make a decision based on a free demo than spend $8 to rent a game from Blockbuster.

Meh. I was waiting for the reliable 360s to come out, but I got tired of waiting when there were good games to be played. So I bought it at Costco. I don't have to send it in if it breaks, I just take it to Costco and they exchange it for a new one and they send it back to MS. They have a lifetime satisfaction guarantee, so there's really nothing to worry about for me.
