I bought an Epson Stylus 740 Color USB in Sept '99 (ironically the receipt says 9/11/99... heh). As foolish as I was at that time I also purchased the 3 year warranty thing they were offering thinking "printers suck.. something is going to go wrong, I hate printers.." etc. I guess I did the right thing..

I returned it back to them today (for them to fix, not a full return), even though I haven't used it for a year.. the thing prints weird characters sometimes instead of graphics, there's blotches, it's crooked, and there's lines all over the damn place. Oh, and it also has a hard time being recognized by Windows 98/2000/XP (tried them all). It's a true POS.

Returning it back to them, though, I feel like I got my money's worth from that damn 3 year warranty thing. It was $39 I believe, and for probably getting a whole new printer back, or at least a tune-up on it for free I think it was probably worth it.. they might clean all of the dust and the crusty food from the casing too, who knows.

I have the same exact printer thats still cranking out page after page of text and pictures. With Epson inkjet printers, you need to let it run at least once a week ( or just clean it) to prevent the ink from drying and clogging up the print heads.

With Epson printers, the clunk-clunk-clunk--fart-fart-burp-burp warm up that takes five min is really annoying. I'm using Stylus 900 $99 refurb and other than the warm up, I love it, because I can get inks for this printer dirt cheap on eBay and its actually half-decent. Photo quality isn't nearly as good as OEM cartridge that came with it, but at $7 each(black is amazing $3.50 each) I won't complain.

They say using non Epson cartridge is bad for it, but having the printer break after five sets of cartridge is better than spending $27 each on cartridge($55 a set)

I to have the same printer and your right the more you let it sit the more problems you have! Mine also will print wierd text every once and a while and beep like crazy! Recently I replaced it with a HP photosmart 1115 and could not be much happier!
