OK, this is the problem.

A few weeks ago I upgraded from my TNT2Ultra to a ATI Radeon 7500. This is on an Athlon Classic (@936), on an ASUS K7M with the AMD 750 chipset northbridge. This is on Win2k

Everything works fine, and I can run all my games just as good as before (with higher res and details aff course), except for RTCW.

The game runs fine, I can start games, see the movies and so on right until the moment that I get killed. The games says Mission Failed, and then crashes (every time!). I find this a little weird. The graphics look great and so on, and the game is smooth, but these crashes make it unplayable.

Can anybody help me with a solve for this problem. Other games I play are CMR2, UT, Q3, Max P, and more, and I havent seen any crashes with these. It must be a problem specific for RTCW with my system, since nobody else seems to have had this problem.

Drivers are ATI 3281, and all other relevant patches for my system are installed.

I have crashes when I load save games. Nothing in the dialouge with Activision helped me. They do have a lot of fixes that have worked with some people. Just go to Find Answers and put in RtCW and you might find what you need.

Are you getting an error message or do you get the BSOD? I got errors because of an incomplete install even though it told me that it installed fine. Check for an updated BIOS because thats what I had to do to get it to install properly and now everthing is fine. Apparently my mobo had I\O problems while trying to install the game. NO other game had any problem with any other games either. I hope this helps and good luck!

Well, same problem with Win2KPro.

I get killed and the screen goes blank (no blue screen here). Pressing Ctrl+Alt+Delete takes me to Task Manager where I see RtCW (not running) and Program Error (running). Ending program error returns me to desktop.

Verrry annoying . . . :(

From that link (gotta remove the extra "http://") . . .

<< Question
Whenever I die the game crashes to the desktop.

Answer
Set your desktop settings to 640 by 480 and High Color (16 bit).

All background applications must be shutdown prior to running the game.

Make sure you have the latest video and sound card drivers from the manufacturers' websites.

If you are using Windows NT, 2000 or XP, set your virtual memory to a fixed size.
1) Right-click on My Computer and select Properties.
2) Click the Advanced button, click on Performance settings.
3) Click the Advanced tab, click the Change button.
4) Set the Virtual Memory to a minimum and maximum size of at least 600MB.
5) Confirm your selections until at the desktop - you may need to reboot.

NOTE: These steps are specific to Windows XP, Windows NT and 2000 may differ slightly.

Awesome (NOT!!!), I have to run at 640x480 and 16 bit color. :(
Hopefully they will release a patch that addresses this Win2KBUG! . . . soon!!!

Thyme: I havent found any answers that I think apply to my problem.

nitrousninja: It doesn't BSOD. It crashes to the desktop with a black screen. An error message is displayed, which is invisible due to the black screen, but hitting Enter will take me back to the desktop, and everything will work fine.

apoppin Exactly the same here. I'll try your solution. Did it help you? Is it enough to change the virtual memmory settings? I think I'll try that first since it seems more specific to Win2k. Running 640x480 on the desktop is not a solution.

You will have to excuse me if I dont answer emidiatly. The holidays doesn't allow me much time with my computer :)

OK, I tried both the possible fixes. Setting virtual memmory to 600Mb, didn't help, and setting the desktop to 640x480 didn't either. So the problem remains the same :(

Only poitive from these excercises was that when at 640x480 the taskbar apeared making it more obvious the game had crashed....

Anybody else with any ideas?

The support person said one person he talked to fixed it by changing to Windowed mode and back to full screen every thyme he loaded the game for the first thyme. I don't know if it helped for me, but it didn't fix it, I know that. Alt-Enter changes back and forth, but you will have to load the save 3 thymes that way.

Well, they know about it . . . running the desktop at 640x480 is a "workaround" not a fix. I DO EXPECT a patch that will cure this problem.

And I haven't had time to try this yet (although I did lock in my virtual memory at 650 - seems like a good idea anyway) . . . something about busy and the holiday season. ;)

:)

I'll report back when I do anyway . . . I'd say keep bugging the developers about this.

apoppin: It might be a Win2k only problem, but the game worked perfectly with my TNT2 Ultra. I played until the Übersoldat on that card.

It must be a combination of Win2k and some of the higher quality settings that I'm trying to use with my Radeon 7500.

We'll have to hope for a patch to soon be out.

It's not a W2k or XP prob...I am having the same problems in 98se. I can plau all the way to the forest1(mission3) and the damn thing goes to hell. error in wolfsp.exe or black screen after a cutseen loads. Activision's help section is crap too...what kinda fix is to set your machine to 640x480. I got a 19"monitor, im not running at that size. I am ready to take the game back....

UNINSTALLING IT off my Win2K laptop fixed it for me (Dell Inspiron 4100; 866Mhz P-III-Mobility/16MB DDR ATI Mobility Radeon/320 MB PC-133).

INSTALLING IT on my Win98SE desktop works perfectly (Tualatin 1.2Ghz Celeron/64 MB DDR Radeon VIVO/384 MB PC-133).

Ain't waiting for no stinkin' patches to play it. :D

There's been an update:

Using a GeForce3 we have had reported cases of crashing when playing the game while the Windows desktop is set to 32 bit color. The problem was seen using nVidia Detonator drivers (version 21.81). To fix this problem: Set your desktop settings to 640 by 480 and High Color (16 bit).

Frankly, I'm p1ssed about this. I figured that a project supervised by ID would avoid basic driver problems like this. C'mon! Wouldn't you expect there would be people with GF3s, using the latest Nvidia reference drivers, who would want to play the game?

I fixed my problem (which was on an ATI based system) by installing never drivers.

It doesn't help Nvidia users much, I know :)
