Return of the GTO!

<< The high-performance car is built by a special vehicle division of GM's Australian Holden unit.

The U.S. version will come with a 5.7 liter V-8 and a 6-speed manual transmission. It will make its debut at either the 2003 Los Angeles or Detroit auto shows, said Lutz. It will be sold as a 2004 model Pontiac GTO.

The current V8 model sells for about $30,000 in Australia.

Lutz, GM's vice chairman, called it "an instant cult classic.

Oh yeah, did I mention it's rear wheel drive? 😀

Here's an earlier report on the Holden Monaro, which will be sold in the U.S. as the new Pontiac GTO.

car looks great so far...
as long as they don't shove those nasty "bee-hive" lights on the back...

but then...
didn't pontiac create the aztek?

*shudder*

Does anybody have a link to information about why the Camaro and Firebird were droppe in the first place? 😕

Aussie import won't end GM's quest for rwd cars
  • But the Holden-based GTO could fill only a small part of the potential market GM sees for performance-oriented rwd cars, Lutz says.

"In and of itself, it can't be our mainstream rear-wheel-drive V-8," Lutz said in an interview at the Geneva auto show.
My favorite GTOs were mid-size. That 'Aussie import' looks more like a Firebird replacement than a GTO.

It looks like a Grand Prix, which I guess makes sense since Pontiac doesn't have any good body design employees. I guess they have to stick with the one that actually looks decent. 🙂

A bland looking front end style, but plenty of HP I guess.

I still like the Grand Prix styling alot better.

The Holden Monaro is a sports sedan. The Camaro/Firebird are sports cars. When the new Pontiac GTO is sold in the U.S., it'll be marketed as the American muscle car response to the BMW M3... except of course that it's Australian in origin, a minor detail 😉

The Camaro/Firebird are being discontinued because the Ford Mustang outsells them 3:1 combined. GM is planning a new Camaro for 2004. Hopefully, they will take some cues from the folks at Motor Trend. The current Camaro/Firebird is obviously irreperable. It's way too long for a sports car. It might have good frontline acceleration, but that's about it. They need to cut it down by at least a foot in length, and bring back some of the old, angular styling cues.

Yea but the M3 can handle - this is just a Pontiac Grand Prix with the 5.7 with Australian origins

How is the Manaro like the Grand Prix? How do you know how it handles?

<< Oh yeah, did I mention it's rear wheel drive? 😀 >>

Yeah, but you forgot to mention that it weighs like 3600 lbs. Japanese vehicles don't
really need a big V8 to compete when they're carrying 600-700+ fewer pounds around.
The Monaro/GTO should make for a great cruiser... however if the SLP guys get their
hands on the GTO and make it similar to the HSV edition Monaros......

Bitchin' Dude.

Now if they would only make it as big as the original. I can't even fit in most of todays passenger cars except a grand marquis.

Ah I just got back from looking at it. YUK looks like a Yellow Buick Regal. All these cars today suck.
