I have an old DOS box I've put together for retrogaming. Please correct me if I'm wrong but, weren't there 2 different type of cables that could connect from the CDROM drive directly to the sound card's CD IN plug? If so, what 2 types were they?

Also, is this cable necessary to hear sounds from the CDROM, or is an IE connection sufficient to the motherboard? Thanks in advance.

There were at least two, probably more (maybe up to 4?). I think the connector types were named after the brand of cd-rom such as Mitsumi.
There are cables that are the same on both ends, and cables that are white on the cd-souncard connector end which are smaller.
If you only use the IDE cable, you can get sound from cd-rom apps but not cd-audio (if a cd-rom is playable in an audio cd player, you won't hear that portion in game without the cable). If you don't have the cable, a workaround is to connect the headphone-out of the cd-rom to the line-in of the soundcard.
