Inspired by a discussion in the 7 Series IQ Thread :)

Pictures: Link

Everything was repeated and the average taken (For the record nothing changed dramatically).

53.03
CS:S: 1280x1024 Default Settings (Reflect All): Avg FPS: 57.72
DIII : 1280x1024 Default Settings: Avg FPS: 12.2 (Yeah thats right lol)
3DMark 01: DEFAULT: 14434 3DMarks
RTCW: WILL NOT RUN

XG 77.77

CS:S: 1280x1024 Default Settings (Reflect All): Avg FPS: 58.66
DIII: 1280x1024 Default Settings: Avg FPS: 24.9
3DMark 01: DEFAULT: 13862
RTCW: RUNS

Analysis:

2D Image Quality is HORRIBLE on the 53.03's. The games Textures seem lower quality, and as DIII shows it is extremely slow.

2D IQ as well as 3d IQ is MUCH better on the 77.77's. However, the textures do seem to jump around a little for some odd reason.

AF is MUCH better on the 77.77's. By the time i reach 8xAF it was comparable to the 16x AF on the 53.03's.

If you look it would seem that my 6x AA isn't working. It looks like the exact same image as the capture without AA. That is strange...

Notes:

Screen Captures would not work during CS:S Stress Test

I would have pictures for the first 3 benchmarks but i had the F-Lock on on my Keyboard so none of them took. It took way too long to do them all over again, so i said, eh screw it :p

I will gladly do more benchmarking if someone can suggest a game. I want to do a Quake III Engine game (I have CoD; RTCW; RTCW:ET). I also have LOTR Battle For Middle Earth, as well as Far Cry. If anyone can post a way for me to benchmark these i will gladly do it and post more results and screen shots.

I'll never go back to a driver pre-77.77.

 Triple Buffering (although I'm really not sure why it took them this long to add it, I had it years ago with my 9700 Pro...)

That was enabled by the way :p (VSYNC was off though (normally i have it on but for benchmarks, on probably wasn't a good idea)).

Having heard/read what Triple Buffering does a million times i still cannot remember.

AFAIK, Triple Buffering doesn't really do anything when Vsync is off. Basically, it introduces a third buffer to draw to so that the video card won't be idle waiting for the next refresh (thus eliminating the sharp 60->30->20 fps drops with Vsync on, assuming 60Hz).

nVidia's MSAA sample pattern cannot take more than 4 pixels at once so if you want higher AA modes you need MSAA + SSAA and the next highest one up is 8xAA.

Half Life 2 doesn't give me that option. Would i have to force it in the drivers then?

You cannot force 8xAA in a single NV4x

So basically, I should update drivers for my 5200Go and expect a small performance increase in CS:S?

EDIT: How can I tell what version of drivers I am using?

EDIT2: Nevermind, I have 66.10 drivers. I could use an update.

Yes, but remember that was just the video stress test. Actual results may be better, but to sum it up... yeah. That was running DX8.1... i couldn't remember how to force DX9 (If i compared the 2 drivers with DX9 forced im sure the results would be A LOT better).

Yes although keep in mind that your performance drop will be quite steep, especially on an NV3x card.

Sure you can; you can even force 16xAA on a single card if you wish.

Ill do it :)

Ill post results from HL2 with those same screenies. Lets see how slow i can make this sucker run. Ill post forced 8x and forced 16x AA.

-Kevin

Edit: I cannot run 16x AA, no option to force it, so ill run 8x.

To force 16xAA you'll need to use something like Riva Tuner although I'm not sure if the drivers expose this functionality on pre-NV4x hardware.

Alright... ill try it :)

I just tried 8x. Ouch when enemies came along down the road, it slowed to like 12fps. It might not even be worth running 16x even to screen capture.

-Kevin

Edit: 8x SSAA was beautiful. I uploaded the screen shot. 100% better than 4x
