Retrieving data from an old hard drive

Just purchased a computer that should be here in a day or two. It has a ASUS p5n32-sli Deluxe motherboard in it. I have an old computer that has a dead motherboard. There are 3 hard drives on that computer that are ATA66 or ATA 100 drives. I need to retrieve the data off those hard drives. Will it be possible to hook up the hard drives in my new rig, given that it has this motherboard in it? Any suggestions would be appreciated.

i dont see a problem....as long as your new mother board has ATA 33, 66, 100 or 133 support. just dont expect the ATA-33 drive to run at ATA-100 speed on your new mobo.

It looks like it has 2 ATA connections so it should be fine yeah.

If not you can get a USB caddy pretty cheap

Internally as slaves, or - put them in external USB or Firewire cases and continue to use them for external storage/data backup.

Thanks guys for the reply. Appreciate it. Any idea on how much an external USB case would cost? Never heard of such thing.

The MB's specs are
NVIDIA® nForce4 SLI supports NVRAID
- 2 x Ultra DMA 133/100/66/33
- 4 x Serial ATA 3 Gb/s

I guess I should hook up my DVDR and my DVDRW drives on the Ultra DMA, not sure if those will work on the SATA.

So I can just set up the drive to slave, plug it into an ide cable, plug it into the mb, and retrieve the information that way? Selecting "SLAVE" on the jumpers is the way to do this ??

If the drive is alone on the controller, set it up as master. you must have a master to have a slave...

Windows should see the drive and automatically assign it a letter. i said SHOULD...let us know how it goes!
