Retrieve numbers from phone after factory reset

I know this is a longshot, but my friend recently lost his phone and I gave him one of my older phones with several hundred numbers on it that he could use until he purchased a new one. Apparently the Sprint CSR walked him through the process of factory resetting the phone instead of simply changing the phone MSL number. Is there any way whatsoever to retrieve the previous phone data? I downloaded BitPim and the phone is connected via USB but I am unable to view any contacts except the ones that he added. Money is no object in getting this resolved. Btw, the phone model is SANYO SCP-5500. Thanks.,
